I just don't see how most normal houses (3/4 bed estate) will accommodate Atmos and as such mass appeal will be difficult.
I read people struggling to run Cat 5 cables on forums all the time so ceiling speakers et all is a non starter for all but the well healed and or committed enthusiast.
It's a niche market but probably a valuable one just now but wether it's worth Meridian leading the way here is unclear. How much software is out there anyway?
We shall see...
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone
@Chris Indeed... and also don't forget a significant number of people rent their accommodation - for whom permanent installations or physical changes to rooms simply aren't an option.
@Longitude0 Yes, perhaps - as you say - the market's already saturated and the demand has significantly dropped-off.
Interesting observations, the future may come full circle and 5.1 prevails however if Meridian does not stay up to date with what is being sold (Atmos) then it quickly ceases to be considered relevant especially at the premium prices being charged. Tough choices which I hope Meridian get right?
Very good question. I would like to hear more feedback on what is going on. But if it is like ninety-nine percent of things in life. Money or the lack of money is the source for the answer. IMHO people like us are and have been for quite a while, a dying breed that most people do not understand. As a buyer I am ecstatic that I can now purchase the equipment that I could only dream about twenty years ago for pennies on the dollar.
IMHO DSP7000 are very good looking speakers, but definitely fail to deliver the most important SQ, hence their short lived production life. More attuned as a replacement for 5500 than for 2 channel use, latterly fulfilled by the 7200 products.
Fine for multi channel but not up to 2 channel critical listening. JMPOV Hector
I had heard that they'd improved markedly with the last firmware update, and I'm considering them alongside 5500's too, so that fits... and I'd be using them in at least a 3.0 system, maybe a 5.0 system with the 7000's (or 5500's) taking on the role of the subwoofer as I think my wife would like to lose ours...
but it's all somewhat academic at the moment, as none are for sale and I couldn't afford them if they were. However I may be able to do so later this year so I'm planning now

It's appeal may be practically limited, but I might suggest that most of this kind of stuff is bought by men, who are often suckers for all the latest features. i.e. I might not be deploying height speakers *now* but I might next year and my amp/processor should support it now just in case. It's also somewhat of a bell-weather for how well supported a product line is.
lets not also forget that many purchasers will be in the states where houses are often much bigger, and more accommodating of a more involved system.

That correct, that's the main area Atmos could be installed in but it's not mass market
Youngsters today can't afford a house let alone high value home cinema to go in it.
Jaguar had this problem years ago when all the 'Old Colonels' were dying off and the cars had little other appeal. If your market changes, you have to change too.

@longitude0 I agree with much that you wrote earlier.
I can't be the only one that sat back and stared at a room full of DSP's and decided to go back to 2 channel. No regrets.
I honestly think multichannel must be over-i never missed it for a second. I was a full on MC advocate previously too.
Hikers not buying much M.....well.....what is there to buy ?
Sit back and enjoy what you have. Very sound advice. Room treatment pays off big time IMHO. MQA into SE's is the last thing that M released a year or two back and I think it sounds fabulous. I know some folks on forums suggest they don't know what the fuss is about but my ears tell me what I need to know and I love what I hear.
7000's looked great. Sounded no better than the 5500 and nowhere near the 6/72/8k range.
