I have heard it said by some (not just Meridian) dealers that the market for home cinemas has dropped markedly, splitting into a very limited, high value, specialised install market (oligarchs etc) and a bigger but lower value market served by the likes of Onkyo and similar equipment. People like Meridian Hikers are just not buying much.

Perhaps Meridian are right to look in a different direction and we should just sit back and enjoy our installations rather than worrying about having the latest gizmo. I don't know about your equipment, but mine does work rather well (it should do - it cost enough). I am establishing a new cinema room, having moved, and although I have upgraded a bit (SEs, v6 to v8, 3300s instead of analogue surrounds) I am not planning major further spend on sound equipment. I will invest a bit in acoustic treatment, which I think will provide better returns.

By the way, some years ago (I think it was about 15) Yamaha came out with a cinema sound processor that derived height channels and used a couple of speakers very slightly forward of the listener/viewer on the ceiling. It actually sounded rather good (as part of a surround system) but it never caught on. Now we have Atmos, doing it properly so to speak. I wonder whether it will catch on - or go the way of 3D televisions.
