Have you reset the speakers as described on page 13 of the DSP33 User Manual (it is on the Meridian website)?

Longitude0,

Not yet, haven't got a reset pin and I'm still looking to a bare metal paperclip!

So, I've found a bare paperclip and used it on all three speakers. I assume that as I look at the comms input port, I'm connecting the two pins on the right?

I've then plugged each DSP33 into the processor on it's own via the 5M cable and none of them seem to come out of standby.

I've also tried to check continuity on the cables but haven't been terribly successful but that might well be because I'm not an electrician and only have one pair of hands...

No. If you look at the comms in socket on a speaker the pins (5) form a semi- circle curving up then down from left to right. You need to connect the two pins on the left (well, that's how mine are!).

Ahh right.. the diagram on Duncan's site is looking at the plug, not looking at the comms input.

This time when I followed the process, the green light flashed for several seconds, then went off, and then back on again. I did it to all three, so I would guess that all three have now been reset. In addition, that the speakers all acted the same way implies that they are working on some level.

However, I plugged all three in as a single, left speaker with no slave and still got no sound output. The green light on the back didn't get any brighter.

The Jon Raines diagram in Duncan's info gives the info you need on the reset plug. The pins are numbered viewing the pins from the outside. Without actually checking a pair of DSP33s it is difficult to say whether the two pins you need to short are on the left or right - but I think you find they are not on the left. Just visualise how the pins would be inserted into the socket based on what you have in front of you.

To check continuity check out how the 5M cable is wired within the DIN plug - it's in Duncan's info or the Wiki - google within this forum will find it. If you can't find it PM me with a regular email address and I'll send it to you.

The behaviour you are now getting suggests you are achieving a reset. But what are you controlling them with? Is your 568 correctly set up as a controller (it would be surprising but it might have been left set as 'not controller'). What is the Type setting of the 568?

Hopefully I do not cause confusion.

Pins 1 and 4 need to be connected.

View is either from solder side of plug (as if you were making a reset plug) which is the same as if you were looking at the socket on your speaker.

Regards I

Sounds like you have successfully reset and indeed have comms problem of some form. Most likely solder joint in cables given the age. But do try putting M5 in a different speaker to rule out the speaker socket. Also try different comms socket in 568. If you don't have a way to electrically test, a visual inspection of inside plugs may suffice - pretty easy to dismantle.

After a certain firmware version, DSP33's lost the ability to go back into standby (a deliberate change by Meridian) - you probably have this version as it was quite some versions ago.

If you have it, you may be able to force the DSP33's awake via connecting a PC so at least you can have some music whilst you are sorting the real problem. A temporary fix only but it will pretty much confirm comms issue.

If you haven't already, you might try pressing the "clear" button on the MSR+ (whilst the MSR is set to a Meridian control set) to tell the set up who is controller. The issue isn't the 568, but the '33s need bringing into line!

I used to have similar issues with '33s as rears and they always misbehaved like this after the system was powered down and back on again.

Good luck

Oddly, I had exactly the same as the OP, 568 and 3 x DSP33 LCR, and it was rock solid no matter what order things were powered up in. I use to run off a remote power switch so everything was bought online at the same time and this happened everytime that I wanted to listen to music.

I don't think who the controller is will matter in this scenario. There is no other possible contender other than the 568 and after a retype that will be set to auto so will just configure itself.

That said, I use to run 568 as controller - I also had a 598DP in the mix so that was a contender for controller. DSP33's will never be a controller and as previously mentioned, master/slave is determined by whether the M5 or S5 cable is plugged in, so that is another variable out of the mix.

It doesn't really get much simpler than a 568 and a pair of DSP33's. You should just be able to plug it in after a retype (which you have done) and as long as cables are working and audio input into 568 is valid (a calibration or sine/sub sweep will avoid even this) and selected, then you should get music.

No voodoo magic should be needed.
