Okay,

Last night, I updated the DSP33 speakers up to date with the latest firmware.

Today, I received my freshly tested cable from Ian. It did have a fault on the digital part of the cable which Ian has fixed. He also sent me a reset plug.

This afternoon. I used the new reset plug and reset both DSP33's (the third is to one side at the mo), cabled everything up, retpyed the 568 and hit play on a CD.

The system played the audio, but the 568 wasn't able to control the volume. I went all the way down to volume 1, and up to.. I don't know, something higher and the volume of the music remained constant.

I then swapped the comms cables on the master speaker, so the master comms went into the output, and the slave comms went into the input. no difference.

Then I unlpugged that master completely, and moved over to the other speaker, plugged the master in there (didn't bother with the slave cable) and still, audio but no volume control.

Any ideas people?

I can control these speakers volume via RS232, but seemingly not via Meridian comms...

David

Is the 568 set as a Controller, a Non Controller, or on Auto?

Look into the comms sockets and if you don't see anything amiss, give them a shake to replicate the trip they took.

Sounds like it's the root cause of your old problem.

Have you got the Meridian set up app?

Configure the 568 as 3 DSPs across the front.

Reset each DSP33, then try the master out to each speaker as a centre speaker (on both comms input and output and making sure speaker is set to centre/left).

Choose prologic or mono.

Also, have you tried both comms out of the 568?

I think it was on auto, I've now set it to controller

I couldn't see anything but I've given all the ports a blast with the airduster.

I've retyped the 568 several times and to keep things simple for now, I'm just trying to get stereo up and running. Once I get two speakers working, I can move to three.

That said, I like your idea about configing it as a front 3 then playing in mono.. will try that smile

At one point this evening I did get one speaker reacting to volume, but it's like it was slowly reacting like it was only sampling the volume change once every several seconds, so it would then enact a step change, rather than a smooth change... then with more fiddling, I lost it again...

So! some limited success.

I've discovered that the DSP33 speaker I chose to put to one side is actually happy to be master and will accept volume control. and it'll control the other two as slaves as well.

Not put all three together yet, but both other speakers will accept being the slave right when this particular speaker is master left.

So yay, that's an advance, but why on earth would the other two DSP33 speakers not accept being master? what's different about them?

David

So, does anyone have any idea why 2 of my DSP33 speakers won't be master? I don't understand how that could have occurred. The electrics and DSP clearly work as they'll happily be slave and change volume accordingly.

What could have happened to make them so shy?

God knows?!

You sure you have reset them and configured them properly?

Have you used the config programme to set them up, or plugged in the cable and powered up the system?

As soon as I got my cable back from Ian, I retyped the 568, reset 2 speakers, plugged it in and it wouldn't work. It was only when I brought in the third speaker as master that it all kicked into life. With that working master, both other speakers will happily be slaves, but they won't take on the master role.

At various points, I have reset all three, both with a paperclip and the reset plug that MI made for me. I have also configured all three with the legacy config program, set them as main volume, secondary volume, not controller, auto etc. etc. Each time I've plugged them in and they won't be master.

I'd understand if the DSP was blown or something, but then the whole thing wouldn't work.

I mean, from a positive PoV, I've got a working system now, but it will make the 33's hard to sell if I decide to do so, as they're not working as they should.

It just seems really weird.

Without being there and being able to play around with them it is all guess work.

It is weird.

Have you confirmed that reset is indeed working - not just the light flashing, but actually checking the values.

Flash memory chips of that generation only have a limited operational lifespan - they only have a finite number of flash cycles.

The speakers should just work after a reset. No need to change anything. If you are mucking around with non default values, such as main/secondary volume etc, then things are not going to work. There is no master configuration on DSP33, its purely down to the cable - master or slave. Dont go expecting that config knows all the intricies of the underlying hardware - it may still go offering options that make no sense on that hardware.

I would double check the settings against the speaker that is working.

Some Meridian can be complex, but after a reset/retype, its just plug and play. No voodoo magic required other than using the inputs/outputs as per the manual. If it doesnt behave that way, you have a problem.

If it's any consolation I have a very similar problem with my pair of DSP33s - despite doing all the usual things (and some unusual things) I still cannot manage to control volume. This is after bringing them out of storage for two years.
