Thanks every for your help. to those who offered to send me, or make me a reset plug. very kind fo you, but I think I've got the reset done. The light flashed etc, which seemed to be a good indication that something was happening. The behaviour you are now getting suggests you are achieving a reset. But what are you controlling them with? Is your 568 correctly set up as a controller (it would be surprising but it might have been left set as 'not controller'). What is the Type setting of the 568? I've followed the manual (press clear on remote while in standby) and the 568 shows as controller. Sounds like you have successfully reset and indeed have comms problem of some form. Most likely solder joint in cables given the age. But do try putting M5 in a different speaker to rule out the speaker socket. Also try different comms socket in 568. If you don't have a way to electrically test, a visual inspection of inside plugs may suffice - pretty easy to dismantle.
After a certain firmware version, DSP33's lost the ability to go back into standby (a deliberate change by Meridian) - you probably have this version as it was quite some versions ago.
If you have it, you may be able to force the DSP33's awake via connecting a PC so at least you can have some music whilst you are sorting the real problem. A temporary fix only but it will pretty much confirm comms issue. So it could be the cable. I thought I had a spare master comms cable, but it just says microphone cable.. so that might be a red herring. Where does one acquire new comms cables from and how much do they cost? I went to the international tat bazaar (eBay) and I didn't see any there. I think I've got an old laptop upstairs with a serial port, I'll see if I can dig it out. I'll also grab a screwdriver and open up these din ports. Cheers David

Ian Fraser, MI' on here, top man on all Meridian cables. Have you confirmed it is the cable by continuity testing?

Only just seen the thread.
I would open the comms cable before going any further, I bet there will be a loose wire in there.
The 568 will work fine retyped, it will default to controller and digital outputs are always on. So wouldn't spend time looking for a serial cable.
No Darling, I've had it months!

Ian Fraser, MI' on here, top man on all Meridian cables. Have you confirmed it is the cable by continuity testing? and MI' has messaged me too. I would open the comms cable before going any further, I bet there will be a loose wire in there. Regarding continuity and the cable, I've opened the master cable up and both ends and if I'm using the multimeter correctly, then it's working.. sometimes. I think all the connections are in place, but the pins look filthy. Not corroded, but.. what's the word.. tarnished maybe? Perhaps that's getting in the way of a solid connection? Is there a way to clean the pins? David

You could try some Contact Cleaner spray available at Maplins type stores.

A nail file will clean them up, or some wet and dry paper.

The pins look ... tarnished With everything switched off and unplugged, just insert and remove the DIN plugs several times, that should clean them up enough. I'd be inclined to just buy a new set of cables, remove the possibility of a problem. MI' will even re-terminate you old cables with shiny new DIN and RCA plugs if you send him the cables. All the best, Steve.

Well, I haven't made use of a nail file, but I did try the plug and unplug thing. 10 times in each input socket, and in both sockets in the back of the 568, and still nothing. Maybe there is a break in the cable.
I don't suppose anyone has a spare master cable I could borrow do they? I don't mind buying a new cable, if I know that's what the problem is..
This weekend I'll see if I can find a serial cable and see if I can control the speaks via RS232 as an experiment...

Ian has offered to test and reterminate my master cable, so I'm planning on doing that to begin with. I've also ordered a serial cable for delivery tomorrow so I'll see if I can control the system with that this weekend.
Cheers David
