Curious to know why you haven't given it a spin yet?

The thing that frustrates me the most about the 203, is that I have no interest in paying £25 for 4K Blu Rays, so I wont be buying many until they are cheaper.

But I did expect it to play Bluray and 3D Bluray competently. As I say, I only bought it because my 93 stopped working so I needed something.

Normal Bluray isn't too bad to be fair, it's a step up from my XBox 1. But 3D has horrible judders. And it turns out the LG TVs do a GREAT job upscaling so I dont even use the 203 for upscaling.

For the price I paid, this machine is completely underwhelming so far, and I'm pretty close to returning the thing.

IF they do fix it, Ill be happy to report back here with the good news.

Cheers
Greg

Basically , I'm pro at procrastinating grin

Seriously , I'm busy building a recording desk in a spare room , adding security cameras to the house , adding outside lighting , and playing on the internet .
I simply don't have time to watch a DVD , nor do I have any 4K ones yet .

in fact , I still haven't got the tv/surround set up properly yet .
I got it far enough that I can cast Netflix and get surround , but have still to unpack the mic and set it properly , get the subs split for music or tv duties etc.

I figure I'll get a spare day soon and do it all at once when the tv can come off the wall to run another HDMI for the cameras .

I sporadically look at 4K discs on bestbuy to see what's new .
They're up to 150 now !!!
I think it was 40 last time I looked ...

The Bourne movies are on sale if that interests you ?

I have also been reading about region free mods .
I was going to do it , but can't do all that "turn it off , turn it on , press this button 3 times , press that button" etc. then last night I found one online from holland (I Think) that does it automatically .
So I might buy that so I can watch some U.K. Music dvds I have .

Relaxing room 1: Vizio P65, Oppo 203, Emotiva XMC-1, Beolab 5.3 speakers.
And a big headache getting it all to play together.

Relaxing room 2: Beocenter 2, Beolab 2.1 speakers.

Music room: Apogee recording with Nuemann, Dynaudio and Meridian speakers.
And a big headache getting it all to play together.

Hi EllisDJ

Thanks for your detailed tips. I will be testing these changes at the weekend. It would be great if even more image quality came out.

It is out now.

I know James pushed to get it out last night as people were having meltdowns on the forums about it not coming till Monday.

I tell you what, Meridian should try and nick James from Oppo, I have never seen anyone put so much time into looking after the end users.
He is the European Technical Officer and the other night he spent till 11pm emailing and calling individual customers updating them with info on firmware release notes etc.

I know he also spent the whole of New Years Day replying to customer emails as too as he was going out to China I think it was, and knew he wouldn't have had a chance to reply for a week if he didn't do it New Years Day.

That is not his job role, just that he is passionate about the products he sells and takes it very personally to try and make sure customers get the service they require.

I would just love him to be at Meridian.

I believe there are people who care about customer service at Meridian, Des Ford for one, are they allowed to deliver/offer that service is a different question?

Getting back to the topic....

So the latest beta firmware looks like its fixed the Bluray 3d playback issues.

HDMI In for use as an upscaler still has major issues, I dont use this because my LG does a great job upscaling but a lot of people seem pretty upset about it (hey, its the internet, thats what happens).

I wouldn't buy one of these if you have a working 93/103. As it stands, the picture quality to my eyes hasnt really moved on from those players performance.

If you really must have UHD playback right now, its getting close to being a good machine. But the whole 4K landscape feels a bit wild west right now and Im personally not going to be buying many discs at 25 quid a pop.

Cheers

Just a quick heads up on this player.

There have been some significant upgrades on the firmware recently with respect to HDR -> SDR conversion. I'd say the machine is starting to deliver on the promises of the early reviews I read.

So for people like me with a 4K OLED that's a couple of years old, ie no HDR, the picture is really quite something. This is probably good news for projector owners as well.

It's been a bumpy ride, but Oppo have stuck with it and really delivered.

Cheers
