What HiFi has posted their review of the Meridian Explorer 2.

You won't be surprised that they didn't award it 5*.

Also, while they applauded its MQA credentials, they omitted any test/audition of MQA playback.

Not sure what I read in this review of the Dragonfly products here.

Quite typical of What-HIFi though they seem to miss the point of MQA and only state dismissively that M advantage will be short term, without a real acknowledgement of the involved technology. Shameful!!

I think that the Explorer 2 had a good review in a recent HiFi Choice (or HiFi+ or wherever other than What HiFi).

The What HiFi review says the Explorer 2 is not as 'insightful or rhythmically adept' as its rivals. I would be very grateful if anyone would be kind enough to explain to me what this means and what it sounds like.

I think this in answer to the question; What HiFi?

The answer allegedly could be journalistic dependance whilst any readership would expect independence.

Just taking the stance of a Private ... hero IH. Can't define the above mentioned sound though. The smell is debatably a different matter.

Do Meridian still advertise in that rag? If not, probably the reason.

To play devil's advocate, I think that this is all to do with PRAT (pace, rhythm and timing). Meridian are widely perceived (if they are perceived at all) as being dull and boring. The reviewers regularly complain of lack of impact.

Jon Honeyball, a writer for HiFi Critic, a magazine that does not take advertising, wrote here that the Explorer "Has all the timing of a sherry trifle." And he claims to be a friend and neighbor of Bob.

This is not a trifling matter.
Any clown worth his salt has spent years practicing the perfect delivery of a sherry trifle. A small timing error results in unsatisfactory delivery of content to the intended target.

Jelly is particularly susceptible to jitter and ensuring it is delivered in sync with custard is no mean feat...

I have found that by not worrying about the expense a liberal application of clotted cream (replacing the custard) stabilises the product preventing jelly wobble and provides the full fat experience.
