Well, the G98DH must have heard me considering ship jumping as it appears to have failed too. The drive is making odd sounds and after a little effort indicates no disk, so I assume the drive is kaput.
Cheers, Ian

How is its power supply? Have you yourself or have you had someone carefully clean the laser lens. Over time they can become slightly obscured with atmospheric deposits or just good old dust.
I think that the power supply is fine. It failed a couple of years ago and I changed it myself using the information posted here. It is certainly worth a shot at cleaning the lens. I will have a look around for a how-to. Thanks for the tip.
Cheers, Ian

Adding to the competition, I gather that Trinnov are about to launch a more 'affordable' Altitude model offering just 16 channels. No pricing or info yet.
Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.
At risk of becoming boring about power supplies, the (SMPS) power supply in my brand new 861v6 failed within 21/2 years. Also, do check the 5V line. It can droop even if the supply doesn't fail. It does need to be set to 5.2v - see the Tech Note instructions that you appear to have already.
Where is the officially puplished source from Meridian with the "not full MQA" for the 861 ? Was/is there an official update question for that issue ? I will not believe/hope, that this is maybe for the "moment" for MCh, but simply adding cards makes a new machine would be an intermediate solution**
There are NO secrets about the "motherbord" what is NOT a motherboard as like PC have. Its simply a "distribution board", there are NO active device on that bord beside some small capacitors. So there is no brake just to install the same card as the 818v3 have and have for the start two channels.
The future of the 861 or better say MCh-music strategy/support/availability from the industry would be the major factor for the decision what to do.
** I think M have another concept/solution in their mind for the future as that be "logic" but speculating here in public doesnt support M from their competitors.. But hopefully we will see and maybe hear soon?
