Is it not the case that the 218 has 'Digital Aux Out'? What is the purpose of that feature?

Even so, in an analogue system, would a better MQA result be obtained in utilising 'SpeakerLink Out' on 218 to 'SpeakerLink' on an AC12, then 'Digital Out' to processor?

I would have thought keeping it simple would be best if not the most flexible, namely 218 with Sooloos or Roon supplying the audio stream to analog out to amplifier to speakers.
How good a DAC the 218 is remains to be decided.

It will output a digital signal, but not with an MQA signal. That is a requirement of MQA.
In an analog system, you must use the analog out if you want MQA, no exception M equipment or any other manufacturer for analog. The exception is SpeakerLink to M DSP's with SpeakerLink, where the M system is encrypted and the DSP is the SE variety.

Is this still the case?

It seems that certain devices (such as Tidal with built-in MQA processing running on computers from various manufacturers) can in fact output a partially-decoded MQA-lite digital stream, limited to 24/96 and (obviously) without the DAC-specific correction. And, yes that is not an MQA signal but a digital signal that has been MQAed.

Perhaps this will be a capability limitation of the 218 in order to differentiate it from the 818v3 and UltraDAC?

Otherwise (playing devil's advocate for a moment)why should I pay £1.5 k to upgrade my 818v2 just to lose some inputs and get a device close to the 218?

As I posted in the thread about Analogue bypass in the G68 we need more firm information.

I was surprised when I was told by the MQA rep at RMAF 2016 that the MQA content could be output digitally to the DAC of your choice. Like many other I thought the final MQA signal could only be analog. He mentioned nothing about a partially unfolded file.

It will be the 2x unfold on the digital output as unencrypted PCM.

So from an MQA file (depending on equipment) I can get a 16/24 output with a bit of MQA goodness (CD+) or via Tidal a 96/24 unfolded output with a bit of MQA goodness (HiRes+ or MQA lite) - with none/some post DAC adjustments? or full MQA with a MQA DAC (or MQA endpoint) or full MQA Auth if the responsible adult has signed the file.

- and these are all "better" than all prior formats.

You will still need an Meridian MQA Endpoint to get full MQA with DSP SEs.

The 218 is a MQA endpoint?
