I thought MQA on the MS600 was definitely a non-starter? I mean, I'd be overjoyed if this was not the case - as a happy MS600 owner - but given the relatively new Explorer 1 couldn't be upgraded in firmware, I am a bit of a pessimist about an older hardware design making the cut. Kent, sooner rather than later, Roon will stream 96/24 decoded MQA to the MSx00 devices. Your MS600 is not obsolete, nor do you need an upgrade to it (which I'm pretty sure isn't on the cards anyway). Hi VK, I didn't think the MS600 (nor the G68, nor the DSP5200s) would in any way be obsolete - and I'm very much looking forward to having a Roon MQA decoder streaming to it, because (based on what I'm hearing over the Stax) I'm certain the system will sound much better as a result. I was, however, expressing some skepticism that hardware MQA decoding would be coming to the MS600/MS200 any time soon. Processing capabilities, hardware architecture and the sheer age of the kit (at least late-middle-aged in IT terms) would seem to mitigate against it. Happy to be proved wrong, not holding my breath. Of course, what we're all really waiting for is a MS600/MS200 MQA-compliant replacement - i.e. a 218 in a user-friendly box! :-)

Will Roon cap out MQA decoding at 24/96 or will it be user selectable depending on DAC capability? I can't comment on that yet.

Appreciate your difficulty in confirming, but it seems illogical to me for Roon to cap the unfolding at 24/96 when the Tidal app itself is already unfolding to the full 24/384 (not just to 24/96 as some have suggested). It just does it automatically without me telling it my DAC's capability.

Clarification: the TIDAL app operates differently depending on whether a MQA DAC is or a non-MQA DAC is connected.
With an MQA DAC connected the TIDAL app unfolds MQA to the full 24/384
With a non-MQA DAC connected the TIDAL app will only unfold MQA to 24/96
I am talking about unfolding MQA actually within the TIDAL app, not simply passing through MQA to the end device.
The TIDAL app can tell whether I have an MQA DAC connected even if the actual MQA decoding is happening within TIDAL.

Are you certain that the TIDAL app is not unfolding 1x to 2x and the MQA certified DAC is doing the 2x to 4x/8x?
I find what you are suggesting very improbable.

The other thing is that I can't get the TIDAL app's decoding / exclusive mode to get my 818 to decode the rest.

I find what you are suggesting very improbable. You could well be right. The screen on my DAC shows PCM 352 rather than MQA 352 when I unfold in TIDAL - ie as if the incoming stream is PCM 352. Not sure why your 818 isnt showing a similar effect. In TIDAL app I just uncheck the MQA passthrough box but leave Exclusive mode checked. Try exiting the TIDAL app and coming back in with new settings? Update: Michael Lavorngas Article in Audiostream yesterday explains all. TIDAL unfolding does first stage and DAC does the rest. Lots of discussion on the Roon forum for those interested. Still puzzled why my DAC shows "PCM 352" rather than "MQA 352" when TIDAL app is used to do first stage unfolding to 24/88

Could someone clarify what they feel I should have checked/unchecked in the Tidal app when I want to play MQA via my MC200 and 808v6. Currently I have only the MQA Passthrough box checked in the Tidal ap.
I am only identifying music that is identified as "master" in the Tidal appl
I then go to Control:Mac and use the Tidal section to "add to my library" the MQA version of music to Sooloos.
With only the MQA passthrough box checked in the Tidal App the display on my 808v6 is showing MQA. then either 44k, 88k, 96k, or 192k.
I see others discussing Exclusive mode but why would this impact the way I am connected?

Are you playing MQA via the TIDAL app into the USB input on the 808 or simply using the ID41 input and playing MQA albums via Sooloos? If the latter you do not need to worry about any settings in the TIDAL app.

If you try the 2L music album you will see the 808 display showing MQA 352. This is one of the few albums in the Masters section which is beyond 192.

If the latter you do not need to worry about any settings in the TIDAL app. Yes I am playing via the ID41 input. I didn't think I had to check anything in the Tidal App, but when I checked the MQA Passthrough box I swear some of the "Masters" tracks that had shown MQA 44k in the 808's window now changed to 96k.
