Hi, any new info on whether older products can be upgraded via firmware? I am looking at a used G65 and HD621 right now. Or are there hardware limitations?

Yes, older product can be updated by firmware. Just not for MQA at this point.
Currently MQA can only be completely decoded by a 818v3, 808v6, or soon to be released 218 zone controller. Any of those three can be used with analog speakers or SE DSP speakers to enjoy MQA.
SpeakerLink surround processors such as the G61RSL, G65, or 861v6/8 can be used with the before mentioned pieces via SpeakerLink in a hybrid mode so to speak but in this instance the MQA processing is done at the 8x8 or 218.

Where would a 218 fit into my system, which is all in one room?
MC200 into G65.
HD621 into my G65.
G65 then connected to 5 DSP5200SE speakers.
Can the 218 sit between MC200 and G65, to decode MQA?
Or does it connect to the G65 output and then I run front the two L and R speakers from it?
Would I have to keep plugging stuff in and out to get between two diffferent setups?
Is the 218 easy to setup and will it give me full MQA as experienced with the top end Meridian processors?

The 218 would connect via speakerlink in line between the G65 and SE speakers. Only the front left and right speaker will then play the MQA file in stereo as intended

Bruce , but if you were only interested in two channel music then you could eliminate everything except the 218 and the SE speakers - right?
Any SQ downsides related to this approach?

Not all two channel music is MQA and could possibky benefit from processing.

ok thanks, can you explain exactly how this would work?
I have one cable going to each of the L and R speakers. Do these both get fed into the 218? how does this work? there is one input and 2 outputs on the 218 for speakerlink????
how can this be installed and at the same time carry on as normal for all my other audio/tv e.t.c.?

how do i stream the mqa from my MC200 in this setup? or does the 218 act as a Sooloos end point on its own without the need for the MC200?
totally confused

Yes, a minimalist two channel system consisting of a 218 ans SE speakers it a great setup.

In your case the 218 would be the endpoint for streaming. You would choose between the two via your control app. If you find it easier, you could disable the MC200 player so that the only endpoint would be the 218. The side benefit of keeping the two endpoints active would be that you could do direct comparisons between a MQA track that is played via legacy equipment versus MQA being completely rendered to SE speakers.

It's quite messy though, no? You'd want to stream to the MC200 --> G65 to apply DSP and room correction with non-MQA material, and to the 218 for MQA material. The latter route doesn't get DSP presets or room correction.
