I spoke to the local hifi shop today and he suggested buying the Sony BDP-S7200 which he suggests will do a much better job upscaling the DVDs.

Connect that to the TV and then connect the TV to the F80 using optical out.

Any thoughts?

That strategy should work well. You can also probably find a cheaper BR player with a bit of research

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Not all upscaling is equal. If your TV is more modern or better than the DVD player upscaling/deinterlacing, then confining the upscaling to the TV may still give better results. You are not going to know until you try.

If you had a local shop that allowed you to try/return that would be good. Local Maplin stores are good for that, but see you are not mainland UK so you may not have so many options.

Hi,

The Sony BDP-7200 doesn't appear to have an optical output.

Spending that sort of money, seems like a lot to solve that particular problem_ I'd be tempted just to use the composite output.

I've ordered a Cambridge Audio composite cable, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice,
Tony

The composite cable works really well , it obviously depends on the source material but I'm happy and the F80 shines musically.
