I haven't had a chance to play around with the Mark Levinson gear much just yet. It has a lot of adjustable features and DSPs to learn about but, on the basis of setup "as supplied" it sounds pretty good on MP3s streamed from my phone. I didn't have the optional Meridian upgrade in my RR (as it was £4,000!) so it's a bit of an unfair comparison.

The Lexus has a lot more equipment fitted and is much more up to date than the RR. The handbooks consist of a total of 1,200 pages so I am wading my way through it all.

I will give some more feedback later.

Suggest you read factual reports.

PS. I work in urban air quality... yes, there are other factors than what comes out of the tailpipe, but what comes out of the diesel tailpipe kills.

PPS. We own a diesel...

I am very envious. Enjoy
Hi,

In my "youth" I used to drive rally cars and the odd bit of sprinting / hill climbing (I had a 300 BHP Lotus Sunbeam for a while, it never went it a straight line!). The last road car I privately owned was a Porsche 944S2 after that I had company cars ... some where fun GTi's and Scooby STi ... but these days the policy is focused on emissions so that means having to opt for diesel fuelled cars. My current car is Audi Black Edition A3 TDi (circa 180BHP) it's basically an S3 but with the TDi engine ... sporty-ish handling but does not put a smile on my face.

Well to cut to the chase I have the option to take a cash alternative rather than having a company car ... so this time round I thought "Why not?" my wife agrees so I am.

The 714 Cayman will be a daily driver, that I will also track from time to time ... my wife's car will be used to go to the DIY stores and lug boxes around wink.

PCC brakes seem to be a lot better now both on feel and durability, estimated life 90K road use, 3K heavy track use.
More on this when I reply to Ian's post.

Regards,
Carl

Hi Ian

Your absolutely right, cold feel is very important.
I too have driven cars with semi-race brakes ... Ferodo DS Performance Pads etc. I still vividly recall having to drive with left foot braking lightly applied to "warm" up the rotors in order to get the car though the MOT test.

Carbon Ceramic brakes have moved on quite a long way from their first inception on road cars. From what I have read "cold" pedal feel is not dissimilar to that of steel now.

There are of course pros and cons: Cost being quite significant and feel still need to be considered. However, their durability compared to steel is a positive, better performance, handling, etc. and aesthetic factors: they look cool, don't corrode and don't foul up the wheels with brake dust.

The Silverstone day is at the Porsche centre on site but we are not on the main race track so there are opportunities to drive the car from cold on a variety of surfaces / conditions.

I like the idea of PCCB but I'm not sold on them yet ... as you say I need to get some non-track driving experience with them before making that call.

Regards,
Carl

Hi,

#1 It started as an small aside by me in the main forum that attracted some interest so I split it out.

#2. It's the other way round, I'm getting a Cayman not a Boxster.
With the hood down the Boxster is gorgeous but with the hood up the Cayman wins hands down. If this was a weekend only car used on nice days then I think I would have gone for Boxster ... open top motoring etc. However, for a daily driver in all British weather conditions then the Cayman wins for me.
Better looking, more secure, more focused handling.

Now if Porsche made a 718 Coupe/Convertible (Targa) variant that would be tempting (additional weight / performance hit accepted).

Regards,
Carl

Those looking at how to purchase on company schemes might like to look at the Teslas.

Because they're electric you can get crazy government rebates (a bit like buying a bike).

Not sure how I'd convinced myself that you were going for the Boxster & apologies for mixing them up; I blame the local Pecorino....

I'm sure you'll have an amazing time with the new toy. Enjoy.

What did the Sunbeam weigh...650kg?!

My first Q was a reference suggesting that *we* seldom see you in Off Topic. See, it's not too bad is it?!

Carl,

Very nice, and not too long to wait (if they stick to the Jan timeline).

I got my non-audio toy this week; ordered last September, but mine does include a Meridian system smile

That said, it sounds so good without the stereo on...
