Hi Guys,

I have just purchased 4x DSP5000, a 5000C and a 568.2mm ... I would really like to add a non Meridian sub (REL or BK electronics) is that possible as it's non DSP?

If you can then how do you set it to work with DSP speakers and non DSPsub?

Any advice welcome
Regards
John

John,

Short answer: Yes you can.

Longer answer: Need to set the sub as non-DSP in the Meridian config for the 568.mm.

There is a line level out on the back panel which you can feed to the sub. In my case I'm feeding an ancient REL Stadium Mark 1 which only has high level inputs! I have to feed the signal through an old Linn amp to get the necessary level.

Practically all newer subs have an line level in which will work. The SPDIF out on the 568 will only work with Meridian DSP subs.

Regards,
Graham

If you do not already own the sub you wish to integrate it would IMHO be worth considering an SW1600 or even better 2 x SW1600. These in my system give a wonderfully balanced result. Set front L&R 5Ks to small and everything falls into place.

Thanks so far for the advice ...

I'm thinking the BK Electronics Monolith as that's very similar to my REL Stadium 3 that I use for music and very happy with it and was in my previous home cinema setup but cant find a Rel Stadium 3 atm apart from a very silly priced one on eBay.

I have looked at Meridian subs and imho they are poor.

I run a pair of analogue subs in my HT with very good results. If you do go down that route I strongly suggest you run some kind of DSP room correction. I use Dual Core from DSPeaker with excellent results. Their earlier, more basic Antimode also worked well.

I run 2 REL Gibraltar subs with my G61R. I use the SUB output from the analogue-outs & daily chain one sub from the other.

Everyone to their own, however looking is very different to listening. smirk

Sorry Hector ... I didn't mean to offend ... but I have heard the previous series D2500 etc. and it did not impress next to the REL but not the SW1600 as that's more modern ... I need to look into that but I have no idea where to go and see / hear one ???

Also do many come up for sale?

FWIW I used to have a BK Monolith and wasn't very impressed. It had significant distortion and noise. Replaced it with an ancient, dirt cheap, M2500 which is much better. Easily capable of shaking the floor, if that's what you want, but can be seamlessly integrated into the system. However, room correction is essential with either of these, unless you have an exceptional (large) room.

I have owned the M2500, D2500 and currently own the SW5500, ... the SW5500 is far superior then the other two IMHO. It is more powerful and able to handle movie LFE tracks with much more ease. I realize trying to find one to listen to will be a challenge.

I haven't heard the REL subs but I did own a few Velodyne subs in the past and the 5500 holds its own in comparison. Frankly I'm not sure why Meridian discontinued it but I haven't heard the current one (it is smaller and probably not meant for a larger room). I have a feeling M had some trouble selling their subs on this side of the pond.
