OK, I've decided that it's time to give an old pair of DSP5000s I have a little TLC. I've had them for close to 25 years now, and never done anything to them.

Thoughts right now are to replace the displays (a couple of LEDs have died), replace the tweeters (I have one spare from an old DSP5000C that died, although I'll probably get a matched pair, since the spare I have is an original) and recap.

The question I have is does any guidance exist on the caps best to replace? I've searched the forum, but there doesn't appear to be much written about this. The most enlightening post was Recapping DSP5000's (thank you MrT).

Yes, I guess I'm basically being lazy, and trying to avoid taking them apart to work out the list myself

So, what I'm looking for is a shopping list of all the capacitors to replace, so that I can buy them before putting a day aside to refurb the speakers.

Any pointers gratefully received.

I'm aware of Chris' excellent service, but am planning to do the refurb myself - mostly because of the logistics and time I'd be without the speakers.

I just re-capped my M60, which have very similar, if not the same amplifiers. From what I see the DSP5000's just have a digital board that feeds the M60 amp's analog input. The electrolytic caps all around R1 and R9 showed the most defrigation after being removed and tested. R1 and R9 might need to be replaced if burned (common problem unless you have a board revision that addressed this). I used the Panasonic FR series which is a high hour 105C series. I would have liked to A-B a couple different cap lines, but no time. If you want to be safe pic a cap series with similar ESR impedances compared to the original rubycon parts.

Out of interest, where are you planning to get the replacement displays from?
Might need to do the same myself soon and wondered how easy/difficult it is.

This is not the full display, but a replacement LED module - so needs soldering skills

Soldering doesn't bother me, I used to do plenty of it years ago (like too many things!)
So may give it a whirl.

Inclined to have a go.
Though must take a look to see how easy it is to get the old one out first!

It's fairly straightforward, although you do have to remove the back cover to access and disconnect the display umbilical cable.

Then you can remove the display from the front by just pulling it, undo 2 screws to detach the PCB from the display fascia, and then you're good to go to de-solder the existing LED module and fit the new one.
