Totally agree.
I was very disappointed with Pom Poko, but thankfully it didn't stop me watching most of the others.

A great genre and very grateful to my grown-up (ish!) children for introducing me to Anime/Ghibli

They haven't stopped. They paused when Miyazaki retired.

They're releasing three films this year: When Marnie Was There, The Red Turtle (a co-production that won a jury prize at this year's Cannes film festival) and Only Yesterday (re-release with new English dub).

I don't think they really count Ludwig; When Marnie Was There I've already seen & it's almost 2 years old, Only Yesterday likewise & it's 25 years old! The Red Turtle is a French film with SG being one of the production companies involved, so not really a SG film as such.

Having said that, it'll be nice to get Only Yesterday on Bluray, to help complete the collection; it's only been on DVD so far I believe.

Locke. Watched it last night & it's terrific. The premise of the film sounds unpromising in the extreme. This Spoiler is a very gentle one:
Basically film of a man driving his car along the motorway, speaking to people on his hands-free phone.
But Tom Hardy's acting & the screenplay are of such a high standard that it's utterly gripping.

It probably doesn't qualify as a movie but we've just thoroughly enjoyed The Pacific; the Steven Spielberg / Tom Hanks WWII production.

Sky-high production values with stunning audio & video quality, some of the most intense battle scenes ever committed to film & a gorgeous little theme tune that plays at the start of each episode. Classical buffs: Is that a French Horn at the start?

Makes me keen to re-watch Band Of Brothers; haven't seen it since it was originally on TV & that must be 15 years ago...

The Martian. Another great film from Ridley Scott; I'd put it up there with Alien as an all-time great sci-fi film. The visuals are simply stunning, the sets are quite beautiful & the film manages to pack in tension, humour, pathos and good old fashioned thrills.

Brilliant.

+ 1 for The Martian - great film and book as discussed above.

My daughter bought me '10 Cloverfield Lane' recently - highly enjoyable romp which keeps you guessing right to the end. Good Atmos soundtrack as well

We've just watched The Night Manager (as previously recommended by Hector) on Bluray over the course of 2 nights & it's absolutely brilliant.

Acting of the highest calibre, brilliant photography, very high production values... it deserves all the plaudits that have been rained upon it.

Don't laugh, Jungle Book.

I was poking around on Netflix and my wife saw it and wanted to see it.

It wasn't a bad movie.

But the Sound Track was really quite impressive. Probably the best streamed Movie Sound Track I've heard yet.

First 30 minutes really stresses the Subwoofer (but it doesn't go over the top, like some movies do).

- Fiddler (IMHO)

If you think listening to music is fun, try learning an instrument.

Some people seem not to take 'animated' films seriously & feel the need to almost apologise for liking them; don't! They are as valid a medium as any other, and most are definitely NOT just kids' films. As Roger Ebert said so eloquently about Studio Ghibli's wondrous Grave Of The Fireflies "Yes, it's a cartoon, and the kids have eyes like saucers [the animation style], but it belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made". Amen to that.

And, yes, the 'live action' remake of The Jungle Book is brilliant Fiddler; thrilling chase scenes & quite jaw-dropping animation. Plus it's as stern a test for your black levels as anything out there!

We've yet to see the Beauty & the Beast remake, but the other 3 recent Disney live action remakes (Maleficent, Cinderella & The Jungle Book) have all been brilliant.
