A little more detail: Apple is in talks to acquire rapper Jay Z's streaming music service Tidal, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter." The talks are said to be exploratory and "may not result in a deal," but Apple is considering the purchase to bolster its Apple Music service.
A Tidal spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that Tidal executives had not held talks with Apple, and the terms of the deal are unknown.

Tidal, which launched in 2014 and was acquired by Jay Z in January of 2015 before a March 2015 re-launch, is a subscription-based music service that advertises high-quality lossless audio and high-definition music videos. Tidal offers two tiers of service, a standard premium option for $9.99 per month and HiFi for $19.99 per month. Tidal has 4.2 million paying subscribers, and as of March, 45 percent of those subscribers paid extra for the hi-fidelity tier.
Positioned as one of Apple Music's major competitors, Tidal has clashed with Apple in the past. In February, Apple was in talks to exclusively debut Kanye West's album "The Life of Pablo," but West pulled out of talks and opted to debut his album on Tidal.
Tidal's strong connection to artists like Kanye West, Beyonce, and Madonna is one of the reasons Apple is mulling an acquisition. Apple has made a major push into both exclusive and original content with Apple Music, luring artists like Taylor Swift, the Weeknd, Eminem, and more into offering up Apple Music exclusives.
Today is the one-year anniversary of Apple Music, which first debuted in 110 countries on June 30, 2015. As of June 2016, Apple Music has more than 15 million paying subscribers.

9to5mac - Apple Tidal I'm not sure whether this would be a good thing in the long run or not. It would it be good for MQA or a major stumbling block given Apple's appalling disregard for high quality audio in both music and movies? ~M~

Tidal may be the convenient vehicle Apple need to deliver its vast/hidden high-resolution iTunes catalogue.
MQA would be the icing on the (Apple) cake.

I doubt MQA plays into the deal. I think that the phone wars are picking up and Apple needs to defend its business. If Apple can lock in the urban market, it's good news for them. Apple already purchased Beats, which says it all about their focus on high Rez,...
With Apple poised to jettison the 3.5mm headphone plug, they need all the juice they can, to get people to make the switch.
Apple has proven to have very little creativity of late. So I just don't see them purchasing Tidal for the mqa/ hirez.

The "Mastered for iTunes" programme requires HiRes masters, 96/24 IIRC - so Apple should have a good collection of content in HiRes which they could finally get around to exploiting?
It *might* not be a disaster, if only someone has an idea why 43% of the Tidal subscribers pay over the odds for lossless delivery...

Tidal selling out to Apple There are several other news segments talking about Apple and Tidal but one is probably enough...

I suppose this was inevitable? Why would Apple want to buy Tidal? The Guardian's response based on this video clip Apple in talks to buy Tidal published in yesterdays Wall Street Journal Online. Apple is exploring the possibility of buying Tidal to boost its Apple Music streaming service, eyeing Tidal's strong affiliation with subscriber-attracting major artists such as Jay Z, Beyonce, and Coldplay. Presumably Apple CEO Tim Cook has done the equation Apple Music + TIDAL = bigger than Spotify? The exclusives to date on Tidal have felt, primarily because of its small market size, like damp squibs. However, with Apple’s enormous marketing budgets behind them they could shoot into the sky like the Fourth of July fireworks while, in the corner, Spotify sits glumly holding a sparkler. Would / could they assimilate TIDAL into iTunes/Apple Music (god forbid) or run it alongside? If the later, what would be (is?) the point of Apple Music that they have only just spent squillions on launching? Or worst case scenario just simple shut TIDAL down!!! Your views would be welcome!
