I'm a week into my rollback to QTS 4.2 and it's still performing to expectations. I also downloaded and installed the QFix for the Fan problem reported on the QNAP site just to be on the safe side.
After my e-mail request for the QTS 4.2 firmware QNAP responded in about 24 hours to tell me the firmware had been withdrawn. But they said if I understood I'd be rolling back at my own risk, they would send me the link to it. I wrote back confirming that I sill wanted it and they sent me the link to it a couple of hours later. That note, with the link to the software, also reiterated that I would be rolling back at my own risk.

I "upgraded" to 4.2.3 today on my TS-453A (dedicated Sooloos Server) to see if the problems between Sooloos and the QNAP firmware have been fixed.
Two attempts at playing different albums failed. Each time a couple of tracks played and then stopped mid track. I reinstalled the 4.2.0 firmware and all is good again.
The whole pointless experiment took about 40 minutes.
I also installed 4.2.3 on my QNAP HS251 that I use for miscellaneous backups and it seems to be running just fine.

That is very helpful - I have held off going to 4.2.3 (I am on 4.2.0) for fear of what you have experienced. Is your second comment about your HS251 intended to confirm that for pure NAS purposes the latest firmware is fine - it is just that it doesn't work with Sooloos?
I am running 4.2.3 build 20170121 on my QNAP TVS-871 NAS, I have had no problems, I do NOT run Sooloos, I run Roon to an 818v3 with no issues.
My understanding is that Roon currently uses the Sooloos protocol to talk to Meridian devices so not sure what the issue is going forward, they could adopt Roon's RAAT protocol as others have?
I've tried each successive QNAP firmware update on my Sooloos dedicated QNAP server since version 4.2.0 and the same symptoms have occurred. Luckily, I've stored the firmware file for 4.2.0 on my MS Cloud so rolling back is a breeze.
I've done the same update to my other server - that I use for backups and other admin tasks - and experienced no apparent problems with each successive update. It performs no Sooloos related tasks per se, although it is the destination drive for my Sooloos generated AAC version of my (owned) library, and my Sooloos backups. I use AAC format music on a HDD in my car.
Hope this helps.
It's interesting that Russ (Ratbert) is running 4.2.3 build 20170121 on his QNAP TVS-871 NAS and has not experienced problems. Either his model of NAS is immune, or Roon is.
