Month old article though, with out of date subscriber numbers.

Latest TIDAL news
Drake snubs Jay Z & TIDAL and launches new album on Apple Music

Brilliant quote
Quote
The strains among the leaders of hip hop and R&B show more and more each day as artists have to choose between Jay Z’s Tidal and other services.
Life can be so difficult some times!

On a more serious note, following the 'Kane Ye' new album release story which had a(n albeit temporary?) massive positive impact on TIDAL subscriber numbers, Jay Z losing out on this one means millions(?) more signing up for Apple instead of TIDAL. What a fickle (and unsustainable?) business model this appears to be!

The artists will go where the money is. Apple must have offered Drake quite an incentive. Have to say that I do like surprising amount of his stuff. (I'm really not into Rap / modern R&B)

I don't know who this Drake is... but I wonder what will happen over the next years with streaming services. I guess there may be an oil crisis in the record industry as well. I do not belive that is because of streaming, but rather an effect of to many one-hit wonder artists.

Back in the days we had quality over quantity, and people where crazy to see them live. You had huge concerts all over the world and they could sell effects and branded dolls with their name on. That era is over... so they blame the streaming industry. Music is not what it used to be. Off course there are still some very good musical talents out there, but they need to fight hard to earn attention in the huge mass of low quality producers.

There are just to many oil wells... overproduction of music.

This could or could not be a good thing for the consumers... I guess that depends on how the record industry adapts. Or maybe artist realize that they dont need the record industry any longer.

ThomasSA,

I disagree with several points in your post. It is just as easy to find good music today as it was as far back as I can remember, and that's a long way. You look at is as too many options, I see it as having options so that I no longer have to listen to the SOS from the 60's - 70's...

There are as many concerts today as at any time in the past. The problem as I see it for many artists that is now the main source of income so ticket prices for many of those are crazy high. In the past these acts did well from selling LP's or CD's or what they were guaranteed by contract by their label.

I agree that there are still a lot of good music out there, but still it is also aaaaloot of crap... The last decade there has been a increase of 510% in registered independent musicians. They of course reduce the income of the big artists and record labels. It would be natural to think that the large record companies want to stop streaming providers and get back the control of the releases.

And that is my point, back in the days there was fewer artists, bigger concerts, more artist branding and everything was controlled by a handful of record companies.

Today the biggest concerts are replaced with festivals like Tomorrowland, EDC Miami and similar. Just have a look at Highest Grossing Tours of All Time, none of the current artists are on this list (except two)... why is that?

When I for instance look at the Norwegian charts on Spotify, they are filled with short-living low quality tunes... they are popular for a very few weeks and then forgotten.

Blame Simon Cowell.

It might also be because music isn't the generational cultural tribal identifier for the young that it was for the baby boomers; no mods vs rockers, or punks sweeping away the pretensions of their elder siblings' prog rock, or synth new wave or new romantics looking for other ways to differentiate themselves from what came before, etc. Today, there is just so much more to choose from, and be exposed to, with the internet, in gaming, in television programming, in social media, and in music of all genres of course; so many other things competing for one's limited disposable income and time, that tastes have have become more eclectic and fragmented.

Yes, you may be into something there... new generation, new times.
I read that there are more artists making money on music now then before. Its just that now there are more people sharing the same cake, and income will be more evenly split. But i wonder what the average lifetime of artist is today vs 10 years ago.

Music seem to be something you consume and throw away when you're tired of the playlist of the week. My brother for instance (a lot younger than me) he only listen to music via Spotify playlists and does not even know what he is listing to. I sometimes ask him what music do you like? He reply that he dont know. He is not attached to the music, but still he have a huge stereo system in his room.

There are still a lot of good producers, especially in the electronica domain. But rock and other modern productions just dont have the same soul as the good old stuff. It is probably designed to be getting to the top of the playlist quickly. I remember back in the days i had to listen to an album several times before i liked it, but then it stayed with my for a lifetime. Or maybe I'm just getting old and belive everything was better before laugh

More shenanigans!!

Fickle Indeed Mr Reeves!Latest Kan-Ye track available on Apple but not on Tidal!!!. Where is this craziness going to end? I thought Kan-Ye was a member of the TIDAL 20? Clearly as mentioned before the 'artistes' appear to playing the rival streaming services off each other, no doubt at a massive cost to Apple, TIDAL etc. which could eventually find its way to the users via increased fees.

Lawsuit against TIDAL sorted. Jay-z's-got-99-problems-but-tidal-lawsuit-aint-1

I agree with a lot of the previous comments, I think the current goldfish like music consumption MO of youngsters, playing 30 seconds of one track and jumping to another, then another for a few seconds (just because you can and its easy) is symptomatic of the seemingly incessant need to consume, whether it be music, Youtube videos etc.

Eh, I can remember the late sixties/early-mid seventies (the so called 'Golden Age of Albums' - @opyright Danny Baker) when you took your album into school to show off to your mates and you sat down and discussed the info on the back cover etc. etc. without even playing it!

I also remember the halcyon days of the late seventies and taking a copy of the Buzzcocks 'Another Music in a different kitchen' into school and playing it on the Sixth form turntable to the dismay of the Upper 'Sixthers' who bitterly complained it was crap because a) the band clearly couldn't play their instruments b) the songs only lasted 2-3 minutes and didn't contain guitar solo's and c) the LP didn't come in a gate-fold sleeve with a skull on the front!

And finally, lest we forget how we got here, an interesting article! The evolution of music consumption.....

OK son don't worry about it!

Possible worrying news re: TIDALs 'Kan-Ye new album exclusivity' based new subscribers.

Fans sue TIDAL over Pablo album exclusivity

jay-z-tidal-kanye-west-sued-for-misstatements-about-the-life-of-pablo-exclusivity

It must be the season for lawsuits in the good old US of A! This is just crazy. Looks like the previous comments about exclusivity were just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks to Beyonce’s Lemonade, Jay Z’s Tidal is back on the top of the app charts

Another temporary(?) hike in TIDAL's subscriber numbers this time courtesy of his Mrs. Key Quote
Quote
This short term popularity doesn’t necessarily spell long-term success for Tidal, however. The service offers a month-long free trial but no free, ad-supported service like rival Spotify, so it’s easy for users to abandon it after 30 days. It is still far behind Spotify in popularity—the Stockholm-based music streamer has 30 million paying subscribers, compared to Tidal’s 3 million.
At least this time everybody knows that it hits the Apple Store as well today so no further lawsuits should ensue for now!
