I haven't been following all the developments of Roon but I have an MD600 and remember that the reason I didn't adopt Roon was because initially at least the library had to be migrated and reformatted or dumped onto a QNAP to work properly with Roon. Is that still the case or is it easier now for Roon to see a Sooloos library on an MD600 and use it? I have 818v3 as one endpoint and also 861v8 as another.

The amount of work required is not that bad, how big is your library?

Whether you want the data on a NAS (which does not have to be QNAP, it is Meridian that only support QNAP NAS units) or an external USB disk attached to your server is your choice.

I would export to native format on an external drive from Sooloos and leave the Sooloos data intact on your MD600 so you have an option to switch back if you so choose. Then attach the external drive to your Roon server of choice and watch it build your library. I wouldn't personally use the MD600 as a NAS as there are much better solutions available for not much money YMMV.

Thanks. Library not that big, but in my Meridian system I don't currently have another NAS or USB drive. So, sounds like Roon won't support MD600 library directly, and you still have to migrate data to another drive.

Seems a shame to abandon the MD600, but I may have to if M stops Sooloos development.

You can use the MD600 as the NAS for a Roon library but it would not be my choice. I would still export the Sooloos library although I believe Roon can read the Sooloos files but it restricts what Roon is able to do so it is not recommended, then copy it back to the drives on the MD600.

The MD600 just shows on the network as a disk like any other disk would then you just drag and drop the files.

So is Meridian's Sooloos.

Luckily both products have a place within this market - really just depends on the end-user.

What makes you so sure Roon will still be around in a few years time, it's expensive and doesn't have a hardware company behind it unlike Meridian.

I sure hope they upgrade Sooloos and not kill it off. I tried Roon immediately after it was released and "at that time" it was not nearly as user friendly as Sooloos nor would I use its capabilities to find and play my music. Tidal better integration into Roon is its only plus in my mind.

To each their own, that is the joy of having a choice.

You are correct there are no guarantees who will be around in the future, my understanding is Roon is already profitable, not sure if Meridian is? Personally I want them both to be successful.

If you follow this link to Roon Partners you will see their Partners both for "network players" and for "tested players"; the latter includes Meridian.

Roon have partnered hardware companies so one can have a standalone library and not have to run it on one's Mac Mini etc: a great step forward.

For my part I bought a lifetime subscription to Roon, which I think is the most economical. Roon now also works on the iPhone and Android phones. Seeing what can be done on Roon I would think the Sooloos will be retired in the next year or so; maybe sooner.

At the moment I'm not using any fancy Roon features. I have plenty of storage left on my 1TB MC200 and it doesn't grow much since Tidal was introduced one year ago.

I mostly hit the Swim All music button and get on the sofa. I don't dabble with reading the bios. But I know that can be fun too.

This costs me only the Tidal subscription. Sooloos is already there on the MC200, needing no Linux kernel images to be put on the NAS. It just works.

But I do expect it to get an update soon to be able to get current hires media played >96KHz.

I understand that the Roon users would like us Sooloos to jump ship and abandon Sooloos to get even more thrust to the Roon Empire. But it's not that easy. Sometimes when things works and requires little effort then there is no reason to jump ship to a more costly model.
