Would higher definition playback on Spotify kill Tidal?

Less whatever Spotify would charge for CD quality.

There's a lot to consider here, and I don't pretend that I'm an expert of the economics of the industry or the streaming business models.

Spotify has to build out and maintain infrastructure for non-paying users. Sure there is advertising revenue, but ultimately what Spotify pays artists is paltry.

Tidal pays more to artists because it's model is 100% paying subscribers. If Tidal gets momentum and artists (other than Jay-Z and Co.) refuse to put their material on Spotify, then the status quo has changed.

But it's really hard to see how this will pan out. I would be surprised if Spotify is not considering or actively implementing a CD (or even MQA) quality service, but that's a lot more infrastructure to build out to support storage of the entire catalogue; and with a lower average $/user, that may prove prohibitively costly.

Some people are dismissing Tidal subscription numbers, but I feel that any number of paying users is a win for music. Ultimately, I hope that we will have a choice.

I'm wondering if the MQA deal is exclusive to Tidal initially and how long they will hang in there for Tidal? Seems Tidal are too busy working deals and don't have time with MQA.
I could be wrong but ...

First they would have to significantly improve delivery. I have not heard a single track on Spotify without dropouts. This does not happen when streaming from the BBC so it cannot be down to my connection.

Tidal is not perfect but in my view ahead of the game in quality and stability than the others. It's very disappointing that MQA did not appear as promised, though it's evident now that the stories released in late 2014 by all and sundry fell well short of recognising the complexity of MQA in practice - not least Meridian.

Yes there are some big battalions out there, but one Apple Music despite its clout is pretty hopeless- it's well down the list in my experience - maybe near the bottom - I have not checked them all.

Long live Tidal !

I agree.

Tidal bashing is not smart and on fora out there it seems a hip thing to complain but not to recognise the streaming quality.

The music featured on the Tidal start screen is not to everyones taste but IMO that kind of artists need to be there to attract the younger audience. I can only speak for myself but I can find most of the music I like very easily, either via the App or via Tidal search, and to add to my Sooloos.

Tidal is owned by the investor, neither here or there if it is on top of his/their priorities, it is Tidal the company who gives the service reliably, up to date, at high streaming quality, global avaialable, well integrated, affordable and I believe awarding the artists better than the others. Kudos to Mr. Pål Bråtelund and the whole team around him.

Cheers!

There are some positive things out there........................

A recent rather excellent review of TIDAL from TechRadar

Tidal is a superb music streaming service

Also, an interesting (and positive) view on TIDALs share of the market re: Premium HiFi users rather than just bog standard $9.99 ones.

Tidal might not be the car crash you think!

OK, the title could be more positive but the quote below sounds encouraging

Quote
Either way, if over half of subscribers continue to be HiFi users, they have the potential to transform the company’s finances much more quickly than if it was relying on standard users alone. Even at a straight 50/50 split between standard and HiFi users, it means one million US Tidal users are worth $14,990,000 per month – a whopping $5 million more per month than the same number of users at other, $9.99-only services.

Finally, anyone else noticed that the monthly payments are now going to 'HiFi Global GB' rather than the 'TIDAL HiFi COM MALMO' account used previously? Just a different bank account being used or are the rumours about a takeover (from Samsung?) about to become true?

Respectfully, I kind of feel entitled to express whatever opinion I like. I don't see any bashing going on, just people expressing their views and comparisons to other offerings.

I think JaapJan is referencing the general mood across various media/fora... not specifically your views. I tend to agree and also find the constant MQA bashing on various forums also tedious. That is even worse coming from pseudo-experts who know enough to appear to have "figured it all out".

I do agree that Tidal SQ is terrific. I honestly don't worry about whether albums in my library are Tidal or local. They all sound great and load up and play just the same. That is quite a USP for a streaming service and also the integration with Sooloos... and even more impressively with Roon.

Unfortunately Tidal / Sooloos / C15 or Sooloos TouchPC function is broken.
Possible Sooloos/Tidal reboot loop bug?

Not bashing Tidal or Meridian just waiting to get that which I am paying for or have already paid for.

Not unreasonable to be specific, in my view.

Tidal SQ was good for nearly 1 year, now non existent in my case.
