I would like to think that that void is filled by something like an MQA enabled MS200, AC200 or Explorer with digital out.
If they can do an Explorer 1 with digital out and an Explorer 2 with MQA decode but digital out removed, its purely a marketing voice as to offer something at a price point that is going to get many existing users on board the MQA rollercoaster.
Interesting to see what happens with G6x.

An 861 MQA solution will probably require an 818v3 or 808v6. I too very much hope you are mistaken, Bruce. (Saying this after recently upgrading to SE speakers up front, in part for promise of full-fat MQA.) Requirement for an 818v3 would be the proverbial straw breaking the camel's back. I just emailed my local PP to see what he knows. John

It would make absolutely no sense at all if an 8x8 was needed to get MQA into an 861.

Agreed, the MQA decoder in 8x8 is built into the input card, no reason what so ever not to be able to do similar with an 861.

An 861 MQA solution will probably require an 818v3 or 808v6. Well, if that is the case, then MQA is firmly off my roadmap. I have no intention at this stage of buying an expensive audio endpoint for a format which IMHO has a high probability of disappearing into obscurity. Whether or not "full" MQA needs an 8x8 surely if you believe that MQA has a "high probability of disappearing" then you wouldn't be interested / investing anyway? From the looks of it you already have "an expensive endpoint" in the 861v8 and you've already "invested" in atmos which some may argue may not "make it" and certainly isn't quite there yet either (but also could be in the future). We all make out investment choices and it seems to me we should just enjoy the music and see how things play out...

I think what Bruce is talking about is interim solution. Of course we as 861 owners are awaiting the full fat immersive sound atmos/auro/dtsx/MCH MQA endpoint solution 861vX with a 2016 fascia 😜

It's all a bit of a gamble when you buy into first generation stuff as an early adopter. While I’m prepared to make some investment in buying into MQA, one the size of the 818 wasn’t what I had in mind. With respect to Atmos\DTS:X, for me these formats have already made it. The algorithms that come with these considerably enhance the listening experience to all Bluray sound tracks.
Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Looking forward to "Immersive Sound" Trifield playing MQA.

It is very ironic that - 818v3 excepted - as a legacy system owner (861v4LPSU and DSP6000), I have MQA with Trifield already with nominally zero loss in functionality.
If I've read the situation correctly, in the absence of v2 comms over SpeakerLink, the 818v3 must assume that my DSPs are older and apply a "legacy Meridian DAC" profile to the data before moving it on at 88/24 (or 96/24). This allows me to put my 861v4 in between 818 and 6ks and access to all the of 861's DSP processing modes as well as the benefits of MRC. On the downside, there will be higher jitter from the 861v4 to the 6ks; but this is a moot point: I need MRC.
The concept of MQA "metadata" and "DAC profiles" is interesting. It's unclear how much work the 818v3 is doing to "prepare" the audio for its destination and how much work the loudspeakers are doing themselves. In the case of legacy DSPs, I can't see that either v1 comms or the limited metadata sent over the (original 96/24-limited) MHR link would be sufficient to transmit relevant MQA metadata; and of course, I doubt that legacy DSPs would be able to interpret any additional metadata sent from the 818v3 anyway. So I'm not losing anything in this regard by using the 861v4.
The story may well be different with MQA over MHR via SpeakerLink where, presumably, both a metadata channel is available and higher conventional sampling rates can be pumped down the wire with some form of undisclosed compression.

I also admit that having to drop another £8k or whatever it is to plug into my 861 is a bit punchy!! An ID42 upgrade (or whatever it will be called) would be a lot more favourable!!

Interesting, I see Bruce's post has disappeared. My first reaction was to check the date, but no, not April 1 yet.
Very happy I moved back to my excellently sounding G68, doing away with my 861v6. My recent 10 euro investment in a new volume pot meter made it good as new again, which is good as it looks like it will need to last for quite a while.
Usually I like to be on the (bleeding) edge, but I think I will sit on the sidelines for a while.
I'm betting on Roon delivering MQA to my G68 via a Raspberry Pi before Meridian brings a decent 861vx (or G68 for that matter) solution.
Meanwhile I will be enjoying what is becoming the MQA soap with some already excellent sounding Meridian gear...

John, I have the self same fears, having bought my "MQA" 5200SEs one year ago. I have also mailed my PP today.
