Hi, all~

My Meridian setup is dedicated to 2ch stereo music listening, and I have another full analogue 5.1 channel system in the movie room. I always thought that 2ch is the way to go for the music, but this is about to change as my interest about introducing a center speaker is emerging. Before I go ahead with this experiment(?) I would like to ask few questions..

1. Any (what) improvement when introducing a center speaker? (worth the money?)
2. In terms of setup, can I just plug in center speaker without any controlling unit? (My system is DSP6000 and MS200)
3. With my DSP6000 MKII fronts, which would be the best matching horizontal center? (One of my dealers seem to have used 5000C Smily in stock)

Questions may sound pretty dumb, but appreciate valuable information and suggestions.

Thank You~

5500HC without question. Seamless Trifield. Completely different and superior speaker to the 5000HC. (I have 96/24 6000 and 5500HC)

Cujo,

You'll need a Meridian processor to generate the centre channel from the stereo input.

Also I think I'd wait until it becomes clear what M are going to produce to provide some of the MQA goodness to legacy DSPs.

Let's leave MQA out of this for the time being. You are still on legacy speakers so either way, you will have to wait.

Now, Welcome to the world of Trifield and MCH music! You will not regret it if you do not disregard the importance of physical volume of the center compared to the other front speakers and the importance of keeping it off the floor.

1. Get the Center speaker Trifield and MCH music deserves. That means from DSP5500HC and up. Sure an identical vertical speaker of your fronts (DSP6000 MKII) IS the holy grail, but not many are able to accomodate the height with a screen in place.

2. Placement of horizontal center speaker is critical. Set it as *high* as you possibly can on a stable platform that does not resonate. Now I mean this literally. Putting a big horizontal speaker on a short stand and tilting it up is NOT the same thing as mounting it higher with less tilt. The higher mounted horizontal center will sound much better. approaching tweeter ear height. The bass and midrange vocals will be much clearer.

3. If you can afford getting a DSP7200SEHC it will upgrade your Trifield experience even more. And actually will be of benefit even when setup with legacy L, R since it will present a clearer top-end that adds to the performance of the vocalist provided it's mounted high.

DSP8000SE, DSP7200SEHC, DSP5200SE sides, DSP7200SE rears, 861v8, 210, Sim2 Ultranero 4, Stewart Cinecurve 2.35:1, XEIT CM-5E Anamorphic lens, Dune HD Duo Cinema 8K and Wireworld Platinum 48G HDMI -> UHD722 -> Shunyata Omega Ethernet. Shunyata/Furutech power-cables/filters. SR Master Fuse@861v8. Uptone Etherregen with 10MHz OCXO clock.

Obvious processor is a 568.2 or 568.2MM, although IIRC Trifield width is still broken for the 2.5 firmware?

Otherwise, G68s are going scandalously cheap at the moment.

With only three front speakers then the 568.1 will also do the job well. No need to worry that it only does 24/96 on the fronts only.

Actually, for Trifield-only, that makes good sense.

Obviously ideal, but...

I should also say explicitly that I do NOT recommend a DSP5000HC with DSP6000s. It's simply not in the DSP6000's league.

Hi

Trifield does not mean just three speakers, with rears you will have content and with a sub too.

Hi,

I agree with MI' about the use of the full surround set for Trifield, but I presume that where the processor is set up for only 3 speakers (LCR), then it will adjust the sound field to compensate for the lack of rears.
