I think what makes it interesting is that MHR is currently limited to 96/24.

Yes that is what shows on a few of the MQA files I have when played from 818v3 to DSP8000SEs.

But 384kHz on SE has been shown from the start. It was shown in the initial TAS article on MQA. It's not a new development.

Exactly, that's what I meant.

Now, 352Khz on a NON SE DSP speaker, that's what I'd be curious about...

I thought that with MQA, the display showed the resolution it was originally recorded in rather than what was being compressed down the MHR pipe.

Does the MQA decoder simply decode the metadata and other hints and pass this still compressed down the MQA pipe or does it decode it into full fat uncompressed MHR and send that to the speakers? I suspect it's closer to the former.

Certainly the former, but possibly the latter too. At the very least, I'm pretty sure that at least 176/192k is being squeezed down that 96/24 MHR pipe; but who can really say at this point, apart from Meridian?

I upgraded firmware on both 818v3 and 8kSEs and the result is as described here, both displays show MQA 352 or whatever is playing. And yes, it sounds very nice.

But I also made another change and I can warn people about what happened. I turned off MHR to enable the digital output to drive a headphone amp, and two things happened:

1. The MHR is capped at 88/96 and of course the same digital signal is sent to the speakers over SL. I hadn't thought of that, imagined that there were two independent outputs.

2. But for some reason, the display on the speakers show VCR2 instead of USB, even though the 818 shows USB. This is a bug, but not a very critical one.

So now I'm happy. Although I haven't seen any Studio indications -- I think MQA Studio means "approved", and it is hard to imagine the 2L content isn't, it seems like totally white-glove "Studio" treatment. Any ideas?
