USB would be just be smoke and mirrors - it would be unlimately serial so you still need to do the USB/Serial conversion somewhere. Better externally with a cheap replacable converter where Apple/Microsoft/Manufacturer dropping support for the chipset won't goose a very expensive piece of kit.
