I would have thought that the logical MQA compatible replacement for the MS200/MS600 would be something pitched between the two pricewise which offered the following: ... 1 SL outputs with the ability to toggle between MHR on and off 2 SPDIF outputs with the ability to toggle between MHR on and off 3 Analogue outputs based on a 24/192 DAC with some trickle down from the 818v3 4 DSD capable via conversion to PCM 5 A cheaper case than the MS600 more in the style of the MS200 (but larger) 6 Headphone capability ... Isn't 3, 5 & 6 the Prime? What is then missing is an MS200 replacement with USB host output and 1, 2, 4

Apart from new Sooloos kit there also needs to be a new, MQA capable sub. But I don't think there has been even a hint of this from Meridian. I believe the current DSW [+ firmware update], which already supports EBA, will be fine with MQA sources. I say this on the basis that the extra engineering in the SE DSPs have been concerned with extending the bandwidth of the electronics, advanced tweeter control and of course the beryllium tweeter its-self. For the frequencies that a sub typicaly handles, say less then 120Hz, I don't believe it requires any extra hardware to fully integrate into a MQA setup. You watch now ... we'll see a DSW SE with a super special driver and clamp ring announced next month Regards, Carl

I agree that an SE sub would not need a new beryllium tweeter!
But I had thought that the enhanced electronics of the DSP SEs, including a doubling of processing power, were required for the more sophisticated DAC management that is a part of MQA delivery.
However, I certainly do not expect any developments soon, especially in the light of the very depressing news that Meridian will not be at Bristol in any shape or form. This has traditionally been the occasion when new products are introduced to the UK.

Hi, I agree that an SE sub would not need a new beryllium tweeter! LOL ... though my comments should be taken in context ... what I was attempting to portray was that the SE engineering work (in order to support MQA) was mainly to improve the MF and HF performance ... and that these advances were not so relevant transitioning to subs. But I had thought that the enhanced electronics of the DSP SEs, including a doubling of processing power, were required for the more sophisticated DAC management that is a part of MQA delivery. Long before MQA was public I was told [by M] that the main purpose for the extra DSP chip was for "advanced tweeter management". It's from this comment and that the DSW supports EBA ... that I feel it DSW maybe good enough "as is" for MQA. Hope that helps clarify my educated guess. It would of course it wold be well received if Meridian commented on the use of DSW subs in a MQA SE DSP system. Maybe a PP might know the answer?

Yep, that's what it boils down to ... and my guess is also that it can.

As I said I thought that the double-power DSP was required for MQA rendering and DAC management. Do you know what advanced tweeter management actually amounts to? Was this functioning before the latest firmware? I certainly agree that clarification from Meridian on the use of subs in an MQA system would be very helpful. Indeed, clarification from Meridian on MQA in DSP systems would be widely appreciated. There has not been much evidence of direct communication from Meridian and the "special relationship" recently.

Hasn't Meridian always operated the DACs for the tweeters in dual-differential mode?
I suspect (but don't know) that the increase in processing power is simply to allow the SE DACs to operate at higher sample rates (i.e. up to 768kHz vs. 192k, say).

I am, of course, looking forward to Thursday (but I expect that the firmware isn't going to be posted first thing in the morning!). For me though, the significant milestone is the availability of content from Warner or another major.

I'm interested to know what the overall effect of the hardware/firmware will be on SE's ability with Red Book (5200SE specifically) as it's going to be a couple of years before a decent catalogue of MQA content is going to be available.
I'm itching to replace my legacy 5200 but still not sure about going to 5200SE and wait for content or s/h 7200 and spring for an SE upgrade in a few years when there's enough content to justify it.
Main: Roon-Mac, Oracle Delphi/SME 309/Cadenza Blue, GSP Reflex C, 218, DSP5200SEU, Sky Q, Samsung 49KS7000 Office: Roon-Mac, Quad Vena 2, DALI Opticon 1 Prototype and learning: 101, M30 mk1 Next project: Vintage LS3/5A, QUAD 303
