Listening to the Kate Rusby tracks from Onkyo (thanks for the link!) and the samples from the 2L site via Explorer 2 is not resulting in lights on DAC indicating any other than 44.1. However the sound quality is excellent from both sites! I have emailed 2L and Meridian for their comments....

Is pull back really changed their mind? If so they would be entitled to be upset. Seems a very large point to be down to a simple miscommunication. I must be missing something basic. Why would the DAC in their machine not be authorized?

I like the majority operate on a tight budget but understand if I want the benefit of cutting edge technology to further enhance the enjoyment of listening to great music then manufacturers and record companies need to have some recompense.
Certainly a bit of a PR nightmare unfolding over there at the moment, especially the way Auralic are talking. The way Auralic are saying that MQA must 'now' work has always been my understanding of the process, so it seems a real shame that somewhere along the line they seem to have promised something else to them. There are complaints about all DACs ending up sounding the same but as I have commented there, there will always be analog stages at work high can still have a big impact on the final result, that often get forgotten.

The issue of having to buy new kit is no different than when DSD came along, pretty much everyone had to make a new product to support it. I guess the processing power in the Auralic Vega isn't enough to provide that authentication.

Hi,
It won't until it gets a firmware update to make it MQA aware.

Regards,
Carl

I hear that may be in a month or possibly a bit sooner. Does anyone know?

MQA has not yet completed finalizing the definitive version of the technology; no MQA partner has yet to receive the actual final version of this emerging technology, which will be downloadable to any product in the very near future.) Because of this, AURALiC’s original plan to include TIDAL/MQA capability in the v3.0 firmware being issued today will not occur.

Looks like things aren't quite so dire.

Strikes me more like damage control, likely from both parties. It would be nice for MQA to have sorted this out early in development; as the confusion suggests that their lack of disclosure/interaction isn't just with the end user. Imagine what CES for MQA would have been like, without the Auralic Aries announcement? It was the "it" item, which now turns out to be in question! Minutes after the end of CES.

All I want is an MQA DAC endpoint that is capable of accessing Sooloos/Roon. Which you wouldn't think is that hard. I appreciate the 818v3. But for the current location, it would be pretty massive overkill. Given that Roon and MQA are from the same bloodline, that wouldn't be that difficult. I doubt I am alone in these desires.

We just have to be patient, I guess. cry sleep wink

Instead, why not be optimistic? I hope that Meridian produce the new firmware for the Bristol Show next month. They usually do something special for Bristol.

Another What Hi-Fi interview with Bob Stuart alone recorded at CES 2016, published Jan 9 2016.

What struck me is that Bob clearly states again, "we have a free and open licensing system" when asked how MQA choses hardware and software partners.

Do we know how MQA makes money? I've read that content providers need an HSM (Hyper Security Module) to generate keys during encoding, but this can hardly be the business model.

Free means unrestricted as to who may obtain a license. Royalties are paid per the MQA website "Partners" page.

Thanks, I found royalty bit you mention here.
