- There are product oriented companies As a long-time marketer (CIM member), even so-called customer-oriented companies can either be 'customer-centred' or 'organisation-centred' - even when their existence relies on making a profit.

No argument to any of the responses.
The "M is just not a cusotmer-oriented company, but they produce products that enhance my life" is a little mantra I tell myself at points of maximum frustration with the company.
If I sounded preachy, my apologies. Not what I intended.

But they've been like this since they were a genuine cottage industry in the 80s when I first bought M1s
Having relatively recently returned to the fold I was slightly gobsmacked to find Meridian:
1. Still going strong
2. Doing stuff that's still at the forefront of audio
3. Making bloody brilliant sounding speakers!
So, while I too wish they were more customer-oriented, I'm not totally convinced the future is bleak if the last 30 years is anything to go by.....

My observation was that if they weren't customer-oriented they wouldn't have lasted as long as they have.
There needs to be an element of 'product-orientation' (we didn't know we wanted MQA until it was introduced to us), but the risk is that such companies can lose sight of the end user.

I bought the Prime headphone amp because it was "MQA ready".
I was excited for having an "MQA ready" product so I could hear this marvel when it arrived.
Now the marvel has arrived but I can not play my 2L MQA file.
Maybe we have to wait another year. Who knows?
MQA is sounding a bit like "the emperors new clothes".

I completely agree with you Xanavi. Is it 15 month ago when the great news was presented and we can not play a MQA-file in January 2016.

I was reviewing photos from CES on another site and there were several pictures showing MQA hardware. Here is one of his comments. MQA demos - especially the one in the NAD/PSB room. I took lots of videos! The difference vs red book was big.
I got to see the Tidal Beta (see pic in slideshow above) which shows another level on Tidal above "HiFi" called "Master".
Got an understanding of how MQA will work via Tidal. Also, YES, you will need an MQA capable DAC to decode the MQA signal. Streamers like Aurender should theoretically just need a firmware update. MQA works like WINZIP on a computer. If you don't have PKUNZIP on the other end, you can't get or unzip the file. If the master was recorded in 24/384, the MQA technology "folds up" the bits into a 16/44 packet and then the decoder "unfolds" the packet on the other end. I heard 24/356 master files too. Amazing.
This isn't just a "zipping" technology, it's much more. Keep in mind that the Master File is the TRUE Master File from the original source with any kind of corrections made for faults in the recoding equipment and/or changes approved by the original recording artist. That's the only way a file can get the MQA stamp of approval. I heard (and recorded with my phone) many songs. When they played Natalie Merchant Tigerlily I knew the differences right away. Recordings from 30 years ago sounded current, fresh and new - like they were well recorded today. Current recordings from say Lady Gaga sounded amazing.

I'm eagerly awaiting the ability to listen to MQA in my own home ... on the plus side of getting a deal done, apparently there are only 3 large labels now, controlling 80% of the market in music (Sony, Warner, and Universal - EMI was split up and sold off by bankers when a private equity company failed to comply with loan covenants).
Plenty of physical CD's are still sold in Japan (2015 showed no major signs of decrease) ... but streaming surpassed physical purchases of CD's in the United States in 2014 and crucially, continues to climb.
I would love to stream MQA versions of 60's Dylan or Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young etc. over the internet and straight into my MQA-enabled processor and DSP speakers. To me, MQA feels like the logical next step - a audiophile format designed to have conservative bandwidth requirements, but near-lifelike reproduction of musical recordings.
Having heard a small taste, I am eager for the major labels to sign and deploy their catalogs over Tidal. I still, however, will accumulate physical media (CDs and DVD/Blu Rays) for my favorite artists. Hopefully after MQA and the later labels/TIDAL sign up, other, smaller labels like ECM will follow.
