A simple question. Do new DSP speakers need playing in, to improve the sound or is that a myth?

One simple fact to bear in mind : before any new speakers (from a quality manufacturer) leave the factory, they're tested to ensure they deliver the expected performance. That means, at normal & stable temperatures, they're good-to-go right out of the box.

Whether or not they discernibly change over either an initial period, or through their lifetime, well, I'll stand back & let "battle" commence...

I replaced the mid bass driver on a pair of 5ks and it sounded off balance a bit, a days worth of playing at a healthy volume whilst at work and all was back to normal (at least to my ears). This makes some sense as they are a mechanical device.

New tweeters have been reported to sound a bit shrill, never heard this myself, just the difference between very old and new which is quite marked.

As for electronics burn in, I am on the side of the non believers here...

Ofcourse, all dynamic drivers need break-in.

Crion is right. Speaker cones need to soften up a bit. When my 7k2s were new the bass was all over the place to begin with. And I noticed a similar effect when I first got my 8ks.

And then don't forget to check the cones for tightness after about 50 hours use.

Thanks for the feedback as always very helpful and informative. I found the treable too bright for the first couple of days but after about 40 hours or so they carmed down ( I was getting a little worried when I first turned them on ). They now sound superb and getting better with each listen, fulfilling all my expectations.
