Let me describe my procedure of testing to simplify any further question about the set up.

2 Processors are set side by side.
1 - Proceed AVP2 capable of processing both AC-3 and DTS
2 - Meridian G68XXV presuming to be capable of processing AC-3 and DTS

Source is DVD player, playing Robots with AC-3(DD) audio output

Connection - SPDIF digital from DVD player to:
1. AVP2 Digital Input #2
2. G68 Digital Input #1(DVD)

Result:
  • A. When S/PDIF cable is feed into AVP2, AVP2 responds with Dolby D. A confirmation that the signal is indeed multi-channel AC-3. Trying to change any DSP preset, like PLII Movies, AVP2 will not respond. It continue to treat the signal as AC-3.
  • B. When S/SPIF cable is feed into G68XXV, G68 show Cinema. This does indicate that it recognize the AC-3 signal, as suggest by Gianni. Cycling through DSP button will change the DSP preset to other setting, like PLIIx Movi6, Discrete, etc.
So for G68, a pretty highly touted processor, why do I have to use DSP preset? Why can't the processor just decode the raw/native AC-3 signal? Is this by implementation or my some other misconfiguration?

Hi first, your G68 is displaying CINEMA this is one of the available multichannel presets.
The G68 can only select this if it is processing a multichannel signal (be that DD / DTS bitstream or discrete (3xSPDIF) PCM or multichannel analogue.

So it is safe to conclude that in your setup the G68 is receiving a multichannel DD / DTS bitstream.

If you want to see what input the processor is receiving you need to change the display mode. This is done by press display (sometimes function+display) on the system remote.

Carl,

There's a bit about the decoding and presets here .

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

You don't, the G68 is decoding AC-3 and is using the default multichannel DSP preset called CINEMA however there are other presets that may also be used.

It's not wise to assume the G68 operates the same way as your AVP2, you need to read and re-read the Meridian user guide (we've all had to do this) too get familiar with the Meridian way.

For more information on the DSP preset availability do have a read of the 'V4 Presets and Usage' document that Dominic posted a link to.

Regards,
Carl

Thank You.

The document has clarified/verified the DSP preset. And the "Function"+"Display" buttons press together confirms the input is indeed as it shows "AC-3/2.1 48K" on the panel.

Thank you all.
