Just make sure the unit is powered off ** and then open the plastic drive cover.
Doing so operates a cam which releases the drive and allows in the be slid out.

**
- Press front button (white light, turns blue)
- Wait for unit to shutdown (no light)
- Switch off rear power switch

Regards,
Carl

Hi Richard
Turn off the MD600 on the front panel.
LED on front panel switch turns to blue
Wait until LED on front panel is extinguished.
Turn off power switch on rear panel.
Now safe to remove one disc.

MD600 can now be rebooted with only one disc loaded
Turn on power on rear panel
LED on front panel is Blue for 2 to 3 seconds then off
Press switch on front panel and LED comes on Blue
After approx 10 seconds LED turns White and MD600 is running with only one disc.

No other LED 1 - 6 is showing on the front panel of MD600

I can now check using C15 as to the number of albums on the one disc in the MD600

As I have 2 MD600 units it is a little more complicated the other MD600 must be turned off first. (so only approx half of library is on line)

For 1 MD600 proceed by switching off on front panel LED turns blue
Wait until LED on front panel is extinguished.
Turn off power switch on rear panel
Replace the disc you removed
Remove the other disc and reboot as above

Use C15 again to check number of albums on second disc

Hopefully the numbers are the same.

Power down as above
Reinstate second disc
Power up as above

However there are risks in the process MD600 may go into restore mode with LED 4 and 5 flashing alternately. Why this should happen is way beyond my level of competency when nothing has changed as far as the data contained on the 2 discs in the MD600.

Just my practical observations

Comments welcome from IT experts

Hector

It's important to do all of this. If you understand Carl to mean "just press the button on the front" you'll end up in big trouble. Doing so does not actually turn off the unit, and you can end up confusing it and triggering a rebuild or other problem.

Hi,

Hector can you clarify/explain how you made a back-up of just one drive?

My understanding is that the procedure for making a back-up copy is to do it via Control:PC, or by inserting a 'new' HDD into the MD600.

You seem to be suggesting that you've removed one of the drives (one with some material missing) and have have made a direct copy of it ... is that correct?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian

I'm not sure if the complexity of Hectors system (C15 and 2x MD600) isn't confusing us both?

Does it matter which slot the single disc is in th MD600?

Hi Richard,

No, it shouldn't matter _ each HDD should be a 'mirror' of the other, so replacing any one of them with a 'new' HDD should mean that the original (remaining) drive is 'copied' onto the new drive.

Hector seems to have removed a drive and made an external copy of it _ I just wondered if it was OK to do that.

Not sure how easy this is to do on an MD600 but on my set up at home I have a QNAP TS-251 which is my primary NAS and a QNAP TS-112P that I picked up for £40 second hand on eBay (excluding any hard drive).

It’s is only a single drive and doesn’t have an Intel processor (so no good for Sooloos) but I’ve schedule a QNAP to QNAP back up every night to back up the data on the 251. Easy enough to set up and it acts as an automated backup for not too much money. The initial sync took a long time but now it doesn’t take too long each night for any additional data.

To any interested party.

As a pointer I respectfully suggest those interested view the An Alternative Way to perform Sooloos Backups topic.

This thread is where I got my initial advice on what was acceptable and what was not.

Regards Hector
