So is there a more economic option for failed power supplies for older 861's (v4) [than the new Meridian linear PSU update]?

Mine has just gone kaput!

Yes, you can still get a SMPS fitted for around £300. Presumably warranted for 12 months.

Yes, you can buy an OEM replacement SMPS from Farnell for £35 and fit it yourself.

You don't happen to have a Farnell part number do you?

This ECM40UT31 looks very much like the one needed. Appears to have the very same input and output plugs in exactly the correct places.

I think if you search the forum it will come up but I will look. There are two different ways it can be wired so be careful to match yours. I have fixed a couple of v2 861's this way. It was a cheap $65.00 fix for me.

You CAN use a EMC4OUT31 from farnell as a replacement for the older UMC UPO653S-01. The replacement power supply will cost about £50. If you can source a UMC UPO653S-01 then it will of course be a direct replacement.

If you already have an EMC4OUT31 then just swap it out.
If you have the older UMC UP0653S-01 then you will need to rewire the output plug and also add a DS1813 IC to the front facia assembly.

In addition you will need to mount the EMC4OUT differently since the older UP065S-01 is a 5" x 3" format with mounting holes at 64.8 x 116.10 mm and the newer EMC4OUT31 is a 4" x 2" board and has mounting holes at 44.45mm x 95.25mm

Also note that the old UPO65S-01 board is 27mm in height and the EMC4OUT31 board is 30.5mm in height.

You will need to download this Technical Note 7a for more instructions.

Another alternative is to take the old power supply to an a electronics firm and see if they can fix it.

Last time I ordered this:

U1176969 1 1 0 ECM60UT31 PSU, OPEN FRAME, 60W, 3 OUTPUT 85044090 ECM60UT31

The ECM60UT31 refers to max power draw of 60 watts compared to the ECM40UT31 giving 40 Watts. It has been suggested the 60 might be slightly more robust as it's running below it's capability and for a few £ more it may be worth using this unit. It's otherwise the same size and output connector layout of the ECM40UT31 unit.

Fits the G61 G68 G91 861V4 and others.

I had thought the G98 used a different unit and can suffer similar failure, but checking a failed PS from a G98 and a G91 I now find they're the same unit. Model number VLT40-3200 and another sticker ERS40OUT30. Before I lead anybody astray I'll check my information.
