Meridian have just announced the release of Linear Power Supply upgrades for the G Series surround controllers.

Applicable for G68, G61, and G61R, these power supplies replace the existing switch mode multi-voltage versions with transformer based ones.

The new linear power supplies offer:

Improved power fluctuation immunity even in areas with poor mains supplies.

Sonic benefits from improved secondary regulation, which benefits both digital and analogue outputs.
Lower noise, providing greater detail, clarity and separation on all sources

Price is £500 plus installation, please contact your premier partner to discuss.

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks for the news Rick,

I'm sure a lot of G series owner will be interested in this; improved AQ and hopefully improved reliability.

Regards,
Carl

Just to clarify please:

If I understood correctly, the old "health check" service (now dropped per your post in another sub-forum) for G-series equipment provided a replacement improved (non-linear) power supply and 3-year extended warranty for £350.

This option provides a linear power supply for £500 plus installation with no health check or extended warranty. Presumably there is at least one years warranty on the replacement linear power supply?

Is this a dealer installable option or does the unit have to go back to the mothership?

I enquired with my dealer about renewing my extended warranty a few months ago and was told that it wasn't available any more. There was a suggestion that some of the parts for the G68 were getting scarce (e.g. tuner bits) as well.

Hi Gianni,

Yes that's correct, the old health check included a switch-mode power supply, this is the first time a linear power supply has been available for G61 and G68.
The linear power supply itself would carry a warranty, I need to check precisely how long, but there is no additional warranty for the rest of the unit.
If a premium partner has attended the relevant training at Meridian they will probably undertake the upgrade themselves, whereas other dealers will be shipping the item back to Meridian for factory installation.

Given warranty is limited to nonexistent, is there any chance it could be a diy home install at reduced cost?
Can't be much harder than replacing the standard PSU as per wiki.

I'm obviously very pleased to hear that Meridian are offering retrofit linear PSU's for the G series too. It comfortably leapfrogs the 861 with SMPS.

The Meridian solution presumably fits the space in the G61 well. It's a tight fit for any off-the-shelf linear PSU.

Apologies to all those people whose PM's I didn't respond to. I made sure that almost everything I knew went in the old LPSU thread.

If you were to read through every post I have previously written you would not find any critisising the one hifi brand I have and will likely stay loyal to.

I am a little disappointed that owners are charged £500 plus fitting to replace a PS that's known to have issues. I am not suggesting the original PS was unfit for purpose but it definitely has problems from all the posts I have read about the subject on here. I also had a replacement on my G68 within a couple of years of it being purchased.

I wouldn't expect Meridian to sell at a loss but at £500 the mark up must be significant. G series customers are the future 8 series customers and likely like me to remain loyal to the brand. £300 to £350 inc fitting would seem a much fairer price and still likely generate a profit.

If the PS on my 861 were to fail I would happily pay £500 to have it fixed. I fear owners of the G series would be sorely tempted to spend the money on an alternative new processor and be lost as future Meridian customers.

Anyway back to listening to music on my brilliant sounding Meridian system.

Thanks
