Response from Des in Meridian Customer Support, posted with permission: As one of our Premium Partners has pointed out in the thread mentioned, we do not check periodically for faults on drives. Rather, we use the remote monitoring in two other ways: 1. We often check parameters of specific units as a reaction to report of problems.
2. From time to time, circumstances arise which lead us to investigate groups of products (or even the or the entire population). For example, earlier this year we found the potential for a problem with some hard-drives in Control:15. We scanned the entire Control:15 population for rogue units and were able to identify them. With the assistance of our distribution network, we were able to locate the affected units and deal with them. This involved changing the hard-drives in about 10 units globally. As pointed out in another post on the thread in question, the statements on our website and on our datasheet do include the words “can” and “may”. We could try to hide behind these, but we won’t do that. Instead, we accept that the emphasis we have placed on the remote-support feature is somewhat overstated and is likely to lead some customers to think that we regularly check units without provocation. We’re sorry for contributing to this misperception and, as a result of the thread, we have now removed the sentence concerned from the “signature features” section on the Media Drive 600 page. We’ll also look into the options for dealing with the statement on the datasheet. I made a product enhancement request for a disk health monitoring page accessible to the MD600 user. Des had it added to the list and subsequently responded: ... I’ll put the suggestion of a disk health page forward as a “product enhancement request”. As you can imagine, this is quite a long list, so I will avoid making any promises of action right now. Finally, I’ll just repeat our regret that that we didn’t realise sooner that we’ve presented the capabilities of remote-support in the way we had. Even if the words are not factually incorrect, we need to consider how we present them. Soundserge

Hello to the well informed,
I am on the verge of pulling the trigger on a purchase of a used MD600 but after reading some conversation here concerning hard drive failure I am not wanting headaches. The price for the unit is fair with it coming with both drives (not having to buy separately) but I just don't need issues with a unit that won't be under warranty and my dealer not being close by and also reading here that M does not truly completely monitor for issues that may come up. I also see that those who own them are selling them off and going to QNAP?
I am planning on upgrading my 808v5 shortly to v6 and with the MD600 I was looking to getting into streaming and also storage then moving into MQA with the appropriate speaker upgrades in the future. My plan was to experience streaming through the MD600 then move up. With the concerns that I see mentioned here is there a possibility that the MD600 could conceivably be able to take SSD's for drives hoping that that would help with drive failure?
Just a thought. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

With the MD600 you still need a core and a player. Going QNAP is similar in the storage capabilities of the MD600 with the added capability of running core. All you need then is a player such as a MS200, ID41, or MS600.
The QNAP solution is very easy to set up and is very quiet. With two 3TB drives they can be had around 600 bucks. I have one going in my system so you are welcome to come by and check it out.

The MD600 can run a core. It has been able to do so for several years.
On the other hand, it can't do anything other than be a Sooloos device. QNAP seems a much more sensible way to go if you want Sooloos.

Just a thought. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am not well informed but have some painful experience on this subject. Meridian do not monitor the condition of drives in MD600 units. Catastrophic failures of a single drive in an MD600 should be conveyed to the user by an indicator LED 4 (left) or 5 (right) on the MD600 front panel. However a data related partial failure of one drive may not be indicated by LED in this Raid 1 application. This, not reported, data failure could remain dormant for months in your system if you do not check synchronisation and parity of the two MD600 drives until a catastrophic drive failure occurs. At best you will loose data loss/corruption affected files, in the worst case you could loose your whole library. Just my user experience, but with the knowledge, help and experience of the great Ratbert, in my case after some 4 weeks intensive interrogation and data recovery of stored files, disaster was averted. Do not believe the vague data sheets. However MD600 is still a great product Hector

Thanks to all for your replies.
I do have a ID41 card that is in my 808v5 so that is the end point.
My question was is there a possibility that M may go to SSD's for the MD600 to help with the problem of drive concerns?
Hector I really appreciate your filling me in on the issues that I may come across if I decide to move forward now after gaining more insight on this unit. I do have a location that the unit will be remote so the noise of the fan or drives won't be an issue. I am just concerned about the loss of storage and the money spent to have something that may be prone to disappoint.
I would want to stick with the MD600 but it seems like a roll of the dice. Hector if I may ask how many hours, or time in months or years did you have on your unit before it became unstable and was it only the drives and nothing else contained within the MD600 that was of concern?
I see you still gave the unit some thumbs up. Is there anyone else who has experience with this unit that would chime in and either recommend it or should I seriously consider going down another avenue.
I see that many others do have them listed in their equipment kit list in their postings.

The problem with drives in the MD600 is not that the unit has a design fault or something otherwise wrong with it. Disks will not fail there more quickly than in a QNAP. But the MD600 has no disk-fault reporting to speak of, and even the flashing lights on the front can't be trusted (in my experience). As a NAS it couldn't be more basic.
In practice this means you'll get no warning if a disk is failing. Whereas with a QNAP you'll get an email from the NAS as soon as there is a questionable SMART score - assuming you set it up correctly that is.
Meridian made the core run on a QNAP for many reasons, and this is no doubt one of them.
Don't buy an MD600, buy a QNAP. (This has an added advantage that you can very easily upgrade to Roon at a later date if you wish.)

Meridian really do need to get on with adding value to the MD600 and making it more worthy of its high price. If they don't, I can't see how they will sell many. After all, something like ten times the price of a QNAP and less functionality isn't too good. I'm holding on to mine in hope ......

I'll eat my hat if M launch an upgrade to the MD600. Only reason for having one is if you've only got space for one in your equipment rack and no space for a QNAP elsewhere.
It's a pretty case.
Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

I would want to stick with the MD600 but it seems like a roll of the dice. Hector if I may ask how many hours, or time in months or years did you have on your unit before it became unstable and was it only the drives and nothing else contained within the MD600 that was of concern? Briefly in my case IIRC the failing item was a Seagate 3TB Drive. Naively I thought that the MD600 would report problems but as explained by VK above this is not so. The Drive was over three years old and out of Seagate warranty. Sod's law was also in play here as the failing drive was the one I made a copy of as a backup. When I removed one drive from the MD600 I checked the number of albums utilising the C15, the results were different depending on which single disc was in the MD600. The Disc with the lower number of albums showing was checked using a Seagate Disc checking application and could not be repaired or revived. How long it had been in a partially failed state I do not know. Before making a copy as a back up now, I carefully check that Album data on both MD600 discs (to the best of my limited ability) is identical. Hope this makes things a little clearer. Hector

Hector is that just a case of removing one drive at a time and checking them individually or is there some other secret handshake I need to learn?
I've never removed the drives in mine, is it a case of just pulling or I'd there an unlatch in process?
Regards
Richard
