In summation, the lessons to be learned here are...

It's not a case of if a drive will fail but when.
This is the principal risk in buying an MC200.
If you do have an MC200, it's vital that you back it up to an external drive/QNAP.

And being aware of the cost of replacement drive, a full image backup rather than just the contents.

If it's not just a standard back up that's needed, just for us computer thickies, how would you do that? Do you need the drive out of the MC200 or can you do it through the Ethernet connection.

Reason I ask is can you make an adequate drive image with the drive "live". Do you need any special software to do it.

I don't currently have an MC200 but I think this is useful info for others.

Thanks

Richard

Usually a drive image is a clone, for example on my Mac I use software called Superduper to clone the internal disk to a USB connected disk, I have never cloned an MC200 and suspect the licensing agreement does not allow it.

So just to practice being an arse.....

It's ok to say you need to make a proper image of the drive in "my" MC200 but not to discuss cloning. Perhaps we might clarify what's advisable and what's legal and what's easily done by an enthusiastic amateur.

This was why I asked the question. What are Ian and Russ advising and how do you legitimately do it?

I believe that it is highly likely that the Meridian license is in breach of the Busybox license, in particularly...

Quote
6. Each time you redistribute the Program (or any work based on the Program), the recipient automatically receives a license from the original licensor to copy, distribute or modify the Program subject to these terms and conditions. You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein. You are not responsible for enforcing compliance by third parties to this License.
However proving that all aspects of the software are wholly covered by the license would be difficult, it would only need to link with software covered under GPL to be covered by that license.

That said, the T&C of this website has nothing to do with whether M are abiding by the Busybox license or not, and I abide by this condition but not discussing the means to clone or image ones own legitimately obtained software that will be used on the same hardware from where it originated.

Oh and I didn't start out aiming to be an arse. I asked what I thought was a sensible question and got slapped down.

Thanks Ian very interested in your comments. Maybe not quite so thick as I make put to be?

Richard, the board rules are clear ... Ian's comments whilst arguably 'sensible' are in the view of the moderators quite close to breaking the board rules ... Russ's follow-up reply is even closer ... right up against the wire. I suggest they both know this given the way the posts were carefully composed.

I decided to let them stand but did post a fare-warning about the board rules.
Most HHkers would take the hint and if they wished continue the conversation out of the public form.

Hard drives fail ...
- User should make backups of their audio files.
- Meridian / dealer will replace failed drive (with OS & Sooloos installed) inside unit (for an agreed fee)
- Having an image clone is not required if one follows this route.

Let me be very clear ... continuation on this 'cloning discussion' will result in all these posts being removed.
