Drive had recently had 1200 CD loaded to it and customer didn't back it up. Drive makes some clicking noises but does not allow the unit to boot all they way. Front LED continues to flash. Unit will boot with a known good drive from another MC200 (mine).

Question is, can the data on the failed drive be recovered? As you all know a lot of time and effort goes in to getting that many CD's loaded.

The need to back up such work as it progressed was stressed as important.

There are data-recovery companies, but their services are not cheap, and success isn't guaranteed.
I've had to use this one in the UK before, but there must be equivalents in the USA.

It might be worth extracting the HDD from the MC200, placing it in an external USB dock, and running one of the many data recovery software programs that are available in the marketplace.

I'll second that suggestion. I have successfully used the "Zero Assumption Recovery" and "7-Data Recovery" tools before.

Will this work on a drive that seems to be failing to be read?

Yes, that's the whole point in using such software.

On my Mac, I use TechToolPro.

There are free to use alternatives.

For example, Disk Drill is freely available for both Mac and Windows.

Given that the MC200 is effectively scrap with a faulty HDD, I don't believe that you have anything to lose (no pun intended) by trying Disk Drill.

You need to be using software that can read/understand Linux EXT3 Filesystems. (MC200 runs on Linux) Plugging into vanilla Windows / MacOSX won't show anything useful.

Paragon facilitates the reading of Linux EXT3 external drives in OSX and in Windows.

Typically if the drive is making a whirr whirr clunk type noise then the answer is NO it won't help to load the disc externally. Software won't help.

A recovery service will be required.

That was what I was thinking but I appreciate everyone's input.

I know it sounds crazy but I assure you it is not - the following can sometimes work should you not be able to read anything from the drive:

Take disc drive out of machine, wrap in cling film (to prevent moisture ingress) and place in freezer overnight.

Take out of freezer, remove cling film and quickly put drive in a reader / back in machine.

The above is only a temporary fix but can allow you enough time to recover data from the drive provided you act quickly and get the data off before the mechanism heats up too much. If the drive goes bad too quickly once more, you may need to repeat the freezer cycle again and then try to extract the data very soon after removing from the freezer.

This has worked in the past for both 2.5" and 3.5" drives - the thought is that the different temperature causes the drive head to change its position slightly and allow the disc to work once more.

It is worth a try before going to the potential expense of a professional data recovery service.

John
