I had exactly the same experience as you with a macbook pro (and it was the same last year too).

I tried booting my mac in Windows 7 and followed the advice of Meridian Oxford and it's working perfectly. I'm just going to accept that Mac + Proms 4.0 = fail. My advice is to use Windows if you can.
