Offer by previous PM still stands for you to make the comparisons that may aid your future decisions.

Hi All

Just an update that I managed to get my agent in Singapore to loan me a used DSW to pair with my DSP5200SEs. First impressions, the DSW is a large unit relative to the DSPs, so aesthetically, its not the best pair up. Led me to think that since the DSW has been around for some time (launched 2006 or 2011?) M might do a refresh soon.

Sound-wise for such a large unit, 12" driver, it doesn't give explosive room rocking bass, but that's good news. Its a much subtler, sophisticated enhancement to the sound picture, producing a more three dimensional image and strengthening the bass line with presence and depth. Please do let me know if this is contrary to any listening experience you had with the unit - then I can investigate if it is not working properly ! For now, it creates ambience very nicely.

I havent tried any Bluray DVDs of action movies, but suspect it wont be shaking the walls. Will update after I have given it a go in movie mode.

Best /bt

Do you have tried the subwoofer crawl?

Place the subwoofer in the listening position and then crawl over the floor when playing bass heavy music. When you find the place on the floor where the bass sounds the best to your ears you should place the subwoofer there.

When I demo'ed a DSW I too was very impressed that I heard deep, well integrated bass and no obvious signs that a sub was playing (apart from the fact there was greater bass depth and ambience). So your listening experience matches mine. I personally took this as a good thing, I hate obvious subwoofer boom. I came away thinking it was a fabulous unit.

Meridian need to bring out a sub that is fully MQA enabled.

I thought the DSW was EBA compatible like the DSP3200.

Thanks, Edd

EBA is absolutely *critical* for something like the DSW.

DSW Product Firmware Release 1.2.0 (2014-06-09)

New Features
  • Added Enhanced Bass Alignment.
  • Gain increased for better compatibility in 2.1 systems.
  • Picks up Bass and Treble from SpeakerLink (with compatible controller).
  • RS232. Added control (as DSP520, DSP640 and M6), including use of non-volatile memory.

Edit: MQA "compatibility" is something completely different. The DSW does MHR, so it is "compatible" in some sense (to be revealed). AFAIK though, it predates the SE loudspeakers and advanced (SE) DAC management.

I don't think that there has been an SE version of the DSW and so it lacks the doubled processing power of special edition speakers to render MQA. My hope is that Meridian introduce an SE version ASAP.

Yes, all of that formed the assumptions behind my original post.

Thank you all for such informative posts and sharing. I will learn to do the subwoofer crawl, though the dealer needs the demo unit back this weekend. Being a demo unit I dunno if the firmware is up to date. How do I check the firmware status ?

The lapse of time and the MQA compatibility lead me to believe a refresh is sooner rather than further away. The unit can also benefit from miniaturization since its release at least 4-5 years back.

I will miss it for the time being but the $$$ are better spent on a future proof solution.
