Ronnie,

I installed a 1TB Samsung EVO 840 SSD in my i7 2012 Mac Mini Server (16GB RAM). Roon is installed on this (primary) drive. Roon accesses my music from the second internal drive.

The problem I have is that the Mac is in the office and the DAC is in the living room. (About 100 feet away) Can anyone suggest a no loss of sound quality way to extend my USB on my MacMini to the DAC in the other room?

As mentioned earlier, either a Mac/PC running Roon feeding the DAC (via USB?) or another Sooloos source component with audio out into the DAC.

You could try installing a 100ft run of USB cable from Roon Mac to the DAC, but I'm not sure that this meets your required "No Loss" criteria.

Like others, I feel the most efficient and high quality way to transport the audio is by using your Network protocols... and therefore installing an MS200 near your DAC... and feeding its Optical out into your DAC.

I have tested Roon remote (the graphical user interface) on my cheapest computer, an HP Stream Mini. Works fine. $179. HDMI to the TV. I use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and WiFi, also supports wired.

Hi Anders,

1680 albums.
Scrolling in the browser was exactly the test I made. No wait times at all, the screen updates were instantaneous, even the first time, I.e. Cold cache in the little HP.

Notes: based on previous experience I upped the memory for holding images from the default 64 MB to 256 MB. The HP has 2 GB, a Celeron processor, 32 GB SSD. The HP is wired to the router, Gigabit although I'm not sure tha HP uses Gigabit. The Roon Core machine is wifi to the router, but multi AC with Gigabit+ speed, it has an 8 core CPU and 8 GB, I upped the image cache to maximum 256 MB and the cache was well and truly warm. So this is likely the best possible environment for the HP to live in.

But it does show a very minimal user interface machine for Roon. Modern machine, but minimal.

Only problem: I used the 50" TV as a display, and I kept going up to it to swipe, and the stupid thing is not touch...

Folk in the UK might like to check this out.
Seems to me it would make a good headless server (maybe with optional 8GB option).

It is very interesting to find out that NUC and Mac Mini are leading contenders for Roon server (headless) in HH, because when I decided to go with Roon, the very first two options were these.. Well could be pretty obvious. I am still not sure which device would be more fit to run 449 USD Roon..

My question on HW is that, comparison between using external HD and NAS. I have about 30k songs (2.5k albums) which is about little over 1T. While leaving out the expandabity, possible future headless server on NAS, possible future Sooloos core on NAS options, what would be the disadvantage of using more fast and energy efficient external hard disk for storage?

Thank You

The guys at Roon say that an equally specced NUC running Windows will outperform an OSX Mac Mini running Roon headless.

The issue with running large disks versus NAS is going to be redundancy. You'd need to back up both a hard drive and a NAS regardless.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Thank you for your insight.

I finally decided my hardware for Roon, after carefully studying various opinions and information on HH as well as Roon forum.

This is based on running 2500 Albums, (Little over 1T)

- Intel NUC 4th Generation i3 cpu with extra space for 2.5 HD
- 8G RAM
- mSATA (128GB) SSD for Operating system & Roon installation
- 2T 2.5 inch internal HD, for music storage
- iPad Mini2 (Cheaper than Mini3, but spec is almost identical)

Total cost was less than 500 GBP, now only additional cost would be Roon subscription.

This gives extremely simple one small box (standalone) solution, and should have enough horsepower to run my music collection. NUC has similar chasis color configuration as MD600 (Black & Silver) too. I believe this would be the best possible choice for people with less than 4000 albums.

I will share my experiences, after I play around with this setup.
