Well, I have to say that many artists get little to nothing from a CD sale, whereas at least they do get most of the money from PRS (less their manager's 15-20 per cent if applicable). I speak from experience, so don't begrudge the PRS too much smile Royalties from sales are fine if you ever sell enough to pay back the Record Company's advance to the Artist. I'm sure that the massive-selling artists might get non-returnable cash sums, but for the commoners your advance is simply recouped from the Royalties from sales.
