Maybe, just maybe, we get to hear "Track 2" of any album without interruption in approximately 5 hours time.

Well, now we know who owns Tidal. I have to admit I haven't heard of most of them lol I am lacking when it comes to popular culture but I like the idea of artists owning things and delivering ART.
We will see, Chris smile

It's interesting. There was one hell of a lot of artist firepower in that room. The studios and Spotify in particular might be rather concerned.

Not quite sure how cynical to be on this one, but lots of the right things were being said. A number of the artists, such as Jack White, I would associate with integrity, so there is hope!

If all of those Artists on stage at the Presser were to were to follow Taylor Swift and withdraw their Catalogues from Spotify et al, then that would indeed be the beginnings of a major coup

With JayZ offering a "large sum" plus an "equity stake" in Tidal... as well as Double the standard Streaming Royalty Rates, then that's even more of an incentive for these Artists to funnel their Music thru Tidal rather than Spotify et al.

[Worth noting that the Double royalty rate only applies on the Tidal Lossless option... the standard rate applies on the Premium Tidal option, which I assume is 320kbps MP3].

Per Spotify's own numbers, they have 60 Million members... but with only 15 million paying subscribers... and apparently even that number is allegedly in doubt.

So the Artists see that as approx 45 million people being able to listen to their music for "free"... and allegedly, that is the major thing they want to correct... with one Artist recently claiming that it takes a million spins on Pandora for the Artist to earn $90!!

The whole "taking back Control of our Music" mantra of today's presser didn't explain too much of their strategy... but given the finances, it's not difficult to see music being withdrawn from the Services that don't play ball and cough up more money.

Well I wonder how many of these artists have committed the capital that Jay-z has. The principle behind Tidal is an ex principle of private equity giant KKR. Further, a handful of the artists on stage are all repressed by Jay-Z's Roc Nation, pretty much all the Urban artists. KKR is no stranger to the music business. In my cynical mind, makes me feel a little better.

I note that the reader comments regarding the article on the Daily Mail website are entirely negative, revolving around the artists 'greed' and bemoaning the cost.

I hope they do what they say and support ALL Artists allowing them a platform for the modern world which allows them to get paid.
This means we will all have to get used to paying for music and most of us here are probably happy to do so.
If it is used as a method for self aggrandisement and only rich artists getting richer, then I am off. So I can understand the scepticism which seems to come with anything new. We saw a lot with the MQA announcements as well.

With this money I also think more investment is required in the area of Metadata. Brand new albums with out even a release date and credits is a bit poor for 19.99 a month.

What I do want is a platform where all artists, even the smallest start ups get support and promotion.
The best quality audio utilising technologies like MQA as they become available.
Continued investment in Metadata and the current curation services offered.

Only time will tell, but if the Artists don't do it, nobody else will. This will give them somthing useful to do with their wealth. Payback time perhaps.

Thoughts, Chris smile
