Dont know if it is the problem but some Prolific devices do not work with newer versions of OSX. They appear in OSX as a device OK, but dont work comms wise.

That said, some FTDI chipset devices got bricked by an FTDI driver update under windows, intentionally designed to disable unlicensed devices. it wasnt just unbranded devices that got caught by this, some reputable brands got caught out due to dodgy chipsets in the supply chain.
