Guys,

Today my new DSP7200SE and DSP7200HCSE arrived. Yay!!

Before I install them I have some questions:

- I read in a manual the driver units should be tightened after some playing hours; does this also count for these SE versions?

- If yes, how do you remove the speaker grilles from the DSP7200 driver units?

- I looked at the DSP7200HCSE grille; it is seated with some very tight clamps; how do you remove these afterwards without damaging the grille?

Thanks in advance,
Frans

Different people have different opinions on this, some have tightened them and others have removed the grilles with some difficulty and found the speakers to not require any tightening, I wouldn't worry about it right now as they would have been set correctly at the factory, I would concentrate on installing and enjoying your SE's.

Very good question.

I have 7200.1 and have never been able to pluck up the courage to remove the grilles.

I get so far and then feel that the force required is likely to damage the grille or carcass.

From my experience it has not been necessary to complete this task, especially as no screw torque settings are provided by Meridian.

Over tightening could cause a bigger problem.

Seek chapter and verse in writing from Meridian before acting. Or better still insist that this is done by a competent engineer from your supplier.

If it is new, I would not worry.

I agree, grills are damn tight on my 7200.1. I was able to get grip (3/9 position) but opted not to.

Tightening made difference on older 5500HC. Recommend it.

The SE grills are actualy easier to remove and set back on because of the metal frame.
I had so much problem with the "old" 8000 and 7200, but now works like a charm.
You can feel on the grill on each side that it has a "groove" in just with ease and be careful pull it towards you. The opposite side just has to be wiggle out!
And it's just to press it gently back in when you are finished.

@Pers: what about the DSP7200HCSE grill? I'm worried when putting it on I'm not getting it off again, it's that tight! The center comes with a tool to tighten.

Apart from the removal issue; did you have to tighten the drivers ever? If not I opt to leave them as is.

Hi Frans
Start at the left end of the grill taking out the two first grill plugges then move from each plugg until the right end.
Yes all needed tightning .

ALL need tightening seems to be a sweeping statement, at most I would say ALL need checking, but even then I would say that is only after using them for a while, if you are saying that 24000.00 speakers have to be checked when purchased new to make sure the screws are tight then there is a bigger quality control problem, which I don't believe there is?

I agree Russ. I don't think that new units sit in stock at HQ or distributors for very long and I know that the folks at HQ in the plant will be very precise about how they install the drivers.

To say that new DSP's need to be tightened doesn't seem right (sorry Pers)

I would install the speakers, play them for 6 months and then ask the question again.

My dealer - a PP - tightened the screws on my new 7200SEs on installation; he was of the opinion that it was necessary for brand new units.

One of the main things on a SE speaker is the clamp rings and stability of the driver mounting.
It makes enough difference that an upgraded speaker, without clamp rings is considered inferior.
With this in mind, I would agree that Meridian will be very precise with regard to speaker mounting and would have a recommendation on the time to wait before you try to check the tightness.
At this price, I would insist a dealer checks it for you anyway. That's the service you pay for. IMHO
Just enjoy them, I wish I could. Chris smile

Yes... if a dealer is installing then I would expect them to tighten the drivers as you have paid for them to do everything possible to make the system.

I still doubt that they would need it.

If you cannot sleep at night with the smidge of doubt then tighten.
