Going for bxd's suggestion by using S-video to scart lead first.
Fast, simple and instant results. Will revert back when the cable is in.

I received the s-video to scart cable and got it connected:
800 >> s-video >> SCART >> SCART wallport >> SCART wallport >> SCART >> Panasonic.

Got a nice DVD in the tray, press the magic button and... to my surprise no signal output to the tele.

So I wonder what else I need to do. Looking at the user guide I need to select the correct video output format using the menu, but the machine is not hooked up to any computer, nor do I have any plan to do so (yet).

So my question is: how can I select the s-video output format using the limited keys on the machine only?

On a 596, doing a factory reset would set the default video output to s-video. Perhaps the 800 offers the same option but I could not find any reference to the facility in the manual.

Page 35 of the manual, covers the setup from the front panel.

It's likely that you're not getting S-video, because the 800 isn't set up for s-video. The composite video output on the 800 should always be active, so you can use that to connect to your TV (or any TV) via a standard 'video' lead. (If your TV has a front panel 'video' input then connect into that). That will allow you to 'see' the set up menu on the screen so you can select S-video.

Also, is your "in wall" SCART cable fully wired with all connections made? If it is fully wired then you should get an s-video picture.

If the in wall cable is RGB only, then it might not handle s-video without some modification to your S-video to SCART leads. I can't remember the different SCART pin outs for RGB and S-video, but you usually can't have S-video and RGB on the same SCART as they share some connections.

Are you sure you've connected the input to the correct SCART socket on the TV? Not all SCART inputs are s-video capable. From my experience Panasonic TVs accepted an S-video input on AV2 but even then you had to select it.

Some TVs had separate AV2 and AV2S inputs when you cycled through the various AV inputs, others had a different way to select it in the menus IIRC.

I'm not sure that the S-video output isn't always live on the 596? But it's a while since I used mine to play a DVD.

Good point about the individual scarts on the TV.

I can only select either component video or s-video on my 598 (with the composite video active all the time). On the scart version of the 598, you can't select s-video along with component or RGB.

Pressing the 'Setup' on the machine doesn't reflect anything on the display on the machine when this command is given.

Back to square-1, I need to have a signal passed on to the tele to see what commands are executed and to activate the s-video output.

Looking at earlier advise, when the component output is always active all it takes is a component cable and wire this directly to the front connectors on the television.

Or maybe there is a Dutch based Hitchhiker out there who likes to come and help configuring all the settings using a laptop and the RS232?

That should be "composite" (one probably yellow RCA-to-RCA cable), not "component" (three probably red/blue/green BNC/RCA-to-BNC/RCA cables).

Yes, as Gianni says,

In my earlier post, I said 'composite' video. That's your 'basic' video via a single cable and there is usually a front panel input connection on most TV (unless you've got a Panasonic Plasma monitor).
