I have a 9m x 5m room and find that tight-ish for 7.1, so 8.9m x 7m sounds about perfect for giving a bit more room to the sides.

Do I feel 7.1 makes a difference compared to 5.1? In my case it is hard to compare like for like. I went from 7ks at the rear - having them at the Dolby recommended 90 to 110 degrees relative to seating wasn't practical due to room width and speaker size - to M6s rear and sides. It is more enveloping and diffuse, but the high end is not quite as crisp compared to what was provided by the old 7ks. M6s run as small, whereas the 7ks ran as large; the literature says I shouldn't notice given the omni-directional nature of sub-80Hz bass but, for whatever reason, I do notice a dimminished scale.

My old pair of 7ks netted me 4 M6s, so I thought, sure, why not? If the 7ks could have been upgraded to EBA, I would have been just as happy keeping them as my only surrounds in 5.1.

Presumably, if enlarging your room, it would make sense to wire for 7.1 (or more) anyway.
