'Crocodile Dundee' on Blu-ray. I had to order it from the USA as I couldn't get hold of a copy in the UK (very sad)
Last time I saw it on the big screen was in the cinema.
Can't understand why it gets a 6.5 on IMDB! It's a classic! That's not a knife!
I got 1 & 2 together for 11 not bad and it plays OK without changing regions

Marvellous (There's only one Neil Baldwin) BBC. It's on BBC iPlayer.
(Captain Philips - another great performance by Tom Hanks.)
Both true stories.

Just seen Coherence. Nice little mind-bending indie sci-fi. Not really what I was expecting, and the better for it. Well worth a watch.

Se7en.
Yes, hardly a recommendation as practically everyone will have seen it by now. Still, we watched it last night & it was only my 2nd viewing so it must be well over 15 years since I saw it. Brilliant, obviously, but what struck me (apart from the muddy audio) was just how dark it all was. We are fortunate enough to have a brilliant video setup but I imagine that the Bluray (let alone the DVD) must be a real challenge to those with even decent displays.
Anyone tried it & found themselves looking at acres of "black"? I only appreciated the brilliance of the JVC's black response after returning to the UK & watching a film on Mum's TV; at times the screen was ~ 50% BLACK!

Interstellar! Wow. Great film with a great score by Hans Zimmer. Well worth checking out on the big screen.
Thanks, Edd

Just a quick reminder that Barnes and Noble's Annual Criterion sale is currently running with up to 50% off in some cases. As these can be quite expensive usually it's a good time to stock up .

Finally got round to watching 'A Separation' and agree that it is a very good film indeed. A serious and grown up study of contemporary life in Iran.
In turn I would recommend Krzysztof Kieslowski's acclaimed 'Dekalog', a ten-part series in which each episode offers a contemporary dramatic meditation on one of the Ten Commandments.
Again not exactly fun, but deeply interesting and moving.

I'm pleased that you enjoyed A Separation, Clemburt, as I recommended it in the first place! I bought Poetry at your suggestion & thought that was tremendous too; a great piece of work.

+1 The Lego Movie = Totally awesome The Dutch film The Vanishing by George Sluizer on Criterion. Simple, scary and lingers long in the mind afterwards. Gone Girl by David Fincher. Critics say it is too long but it went by in a flash. Very detailed, nuanced performances and intricate study of violence both physical and psychological. Disturbing but very watchable. ~M~

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring.
Another slow burner in the mould of A Separation or Once Upon A Time In Anatolia but a beautiful film. It's a Korean film, gorgeous cinematography, a great tale & worthy of its place in any collection. Not one for the popcorn crowd perhaps.

The Place Beyond The Pines.
Certainly not a slow burner but just terrific. A slight lull at the start of Act 3 perhaps but don't let that put anyone off for even a second. Great acting, brilliant, twisty plot, & it looks wonderful on Bluray.

I always go for subtitles - the actor's voice is too big a part of the performance to throw away. Plus, anyone else remember "The Water Margin"? I've got mixed feelings about this. Sure, it's great to hear the original language & the actor's voice but if there are many dialogue-heavy scenes then you can find yourself missing an awful lot of on screen action as you busily try to keep up with the subtitles. I've found that all Studio Ghibli dubbing is done to a very high standard by using very high quality actors. Not all films receive the same ***** treatment unfortunately but it can still be the lesser of 2 evils (cue Russell Crowe!).
