Again, sorry if this is a stupid question. I've looked through the Wiki and searched the forum, but haven't found an answer to this question:
I am installing my first Sooloos device (an MC200) in my new system, along with QNAP storage. I have a large number of hi-res files I have yet to be able to play, and I look forward to hearing them. In general, I plan to buy 96/24 files, as that's the limit of my Meridian system's output, but I already have a number of 192/24 files and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried downsampling them to save disc space (twice as large for no benefit). If so, what should I use on a Mac to downsample them (I would simply halve the bit rates to 96 or 88 KHz) to avoid damage to the sound).
If this is a bad idea, why? Since the Meridian kit can only output 96/24 to my speakers, I have trouble seeing the value in the extra samples, but I am interested in hearing expert opinions...
Thanks for any insight that may be provided.
John
Main system: Cable, Apple TV, HD621, G68D, AC11, 218, DSP7200SE (L+R), DSP3200 (L+R Rear) 2nd system: Cable, Apple TV, MC200, HD621, 568.2, M3100 (L+R)
There is no need to downsample the files before loading on to Sooloos as Sooloos will play 192K files, the output from which is then downsampled as required at the audio End Point.
Also if you share your lib with another streamer you might want to retain the file in its original format.
Also there is a sound argument that the very high res files can sound worse than 96/24 files which are already larger than they need to be for human perception. Bigger numbers do not automatically mean better audio, despite what marketing people may suggest. My point is, your not losing anything playing through Sooloos. Thoughts, Chris

No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone
I would stick with the format you download the files in, as Carl says 192/24 is played no problem on Sooloos, as for saving disk space, it should not be a major concern as disk space is relatively cheap.
