I'll do some more listening tests at the weekend. May recruit some local HH to help (you know who you are chaps).

Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear your experience hasn't been good. Would you mind sharing what kit you have and what connections you're using between various bits? It'd be interesting to understand any differences between your setup and mine.

As stated before, I hear much more detail, more space, air, soundstage etc. I also hear much more presence in voices and the overall sound is cleaner and less fatiguing. Strange to hear what's happening in your system.

Cheers
Dave

I'll do my best to answer your question within the context of the Sooloos and Meridian world

Consider the MC200, which acts as a Core, Store and Endpoint in a Sooloos system

For reasons similar to that already explained, you can rest assured that the Music data from the disc is retrieved from the hard disk and sent along the various interfaces where the data arrives Identical and Intact at e.g. a point prior to the Digital output

That data then needs to be converted into LPCM Data, before being output over Speakerlink

So, the Data arriving at the Digital output 'card' is identical to that on the drive.......but it is known and acknowledged by Meridian that INTERNAL RFI / EMI within the MC200 causes the conversion to PCM to be adversely affected

And this results in basically higher Jitter on the Digital output which results in Audio that some / many users can determine as being good but maybe could be improved upon

Where does the RFI / EMI within the MC200 come from??.......typically from the 2.5" Magnetic object spinning at 5,400 to 7,200 rpm in close proximity to the Digital output card.......but also from the other components within the MC200 that are PC based and emit certain amounts of EMI

Hence the existence of the MS200 and MS600.......these have very simple interiors, all with the aim of dramatically reducing internal EMI compared to using the MC200 alone......and the result is that many here feel that their systems sound better as a result of disassociating the Data Storage from the conversion to LPCM

In a very similar manner, if you asked Meridian to summarize the differences between the 861v4, 861v6 and 861v8, they would simply say that they have 'engineered and developed' the internals of the 861 to have less and less internal RFI......thereby ensuring the LPCM output from the 861 is exhibiting lower and lower levels of Jitter.......and again, most here can hear those benefits

Brilliant - thanks Ronnie. That really gives some useful background. So, to ask a slightly dumb question, what do you think is the best Meridian setup for best possible streaming sound? Am I carrying any kind of compromise in that area with my MD600 into 808v5?

Right, now I feel like I'm getting my sanity back.

So, Meridian have done lots of serious work to minimise RF ingress, but I guess it still makes sense for us owners to take sensible precautions in our setups to minimise additional RF - is that right?

And lastly Dave, why MIGHT the GISO have an impact??

IMHO the Galvanic Isolation offered by the GISO could function in a similar way to Ruby Ferrite Podule described above........i.e. that it would filter out undesired RFI / EMI from entering the Sooloos Endpoint.......thereby reducing internal RFI.......thereby allowing more effective conversion to LPCM......and the main result is lower Jitter on the digital output .......and a more pleasing Musical Sound emanating from our kit

However, due to having to deal with RFI mitigation in the 'day job', I feel that the GISO (just like the Ferrite Podule and RFI filtering in the ID41) is more of a "Cure" than a "Prevention"

And as with everything else, it's better to Prevent RFI than to cure it

So, I think the previously mentioned measures to reduce RFI on the Sooloos network is something that people should look at......i.e.

a) a dedicated Switch for our Sooloos kit;

b) Shielded and Screened SSTP cable for all Sooloos transfers (even a good idea throughout the home network)

c) moving any Wifi Access points as far as possible away from our Endpoints to reduce ambient RFI

d) minimizing the use of Powerline Networking devices throughout our home networks and especially not using Powerline connections to Sooloos Endpoints [as they are known to introduce high RFI levels]

It could be then argued that these steps would leave little for the GISO to do (minimal audible benfit) and that would be correct.......but as I said, I believe Prevention to better than the Cure

Summary
Meridian have done a lot to reduce the amounts of Internal RFI within their various devices

By using the few simple steps above, we can help by not reintroducing RFI / EMI in the vicinity / environment of our Sooloos Endpoints

We can add to that by using GISO's, Ferrites and similar measures just before the Endpoint to reduce any remaining RFI entering the Sooloos Endpoint via the network cable

Hi Dave, I am using ID41 in an 808v5 Anniversary into 8k SE Anniversary. 8port switch busy with a bunch of stuff e.g Sky+, Dune, Pioneer screen thingy, PS Audio, etc. Core and store a further 2switch hops elsewhere in the house.

The level of detail with this combo is stunning (imho). So, I did expect to be able to hear something. However, reminded of the info Ronnie noted above (I was there in Bristol 2years ago for that conversation I think), it could be that either

A) my network is clean (doubtful) or
B) the impact of GISO is less with this setup.

As I mentioned before I will test a lot more. I did note you several folks found the SQ to change over time. I'm in no rush.

Nick

Yes, Robert. I used LAN Isolator, and not GISO. But to answer your question, my LAN Isolator is placed between my router and MS200, and the cable used is AudioQuest Pearl which is CAT7.

Thank you

Further to somthing Nick wrote earlier I have just added a further switch in my office to keep Sooloos cables separate from everything else. BT Modem to switch (general stuff) to further switch (TwinStore, MC 200, output to lounge) the another switch to MS 200 with CAT6a cable.
It sounds fantastic to me, has it improved things? I find it so hard to say. Things are certainly no worse. I can't believe my system sounds this good. A lot better than it has a right to judged by the complaints I hear some people express who have FAR superior setups.

I have been listening to Ella Fitzgerald, and Van Morrison and may be late for work now.
Checkout my last FM link for tracks if your interested.

I will add Cat 6 as and when.

This has been a superbly interesting thread and special thanks to DaveyC and Ronnie for they contributions. You have both been very generous with your time and knowledge.

Dave, which Cat7 did you use, where did you get it and how much does it cost?

Thanks.

Hi Ronnie,

I agree with you 100% in principle and it's clear now that the GISO gets its gains simply by reducing RFI that would otherwise be passed into the ID4x and beyond.

I think your recommendations for preventative measures are bang on and I've gone a bit further than that, with an upgraded PSU on my dedicated switch and quite a hairy-arsed RF mains shunt filter (Vertex). I also have dedicated mains (much cleaner than ringmain), but I still got a very big impact from the GISO.

I'd guess that, even with very thorough efforts to minimise additional RF ingress, it's ultimately going to get in there from several sources that can't be avoided, including mains.

As you say, adding GISOs or ferrites after taking all the avoidance measures might be a good route. It's certainly worked for me. But with the new level of detail and subtlety that I'm getting with the GISO and given how easily I got it, I'm thinking I need to spend some time working out how to go further on the prevention side. In essence, I see things exactly as you do, although my gut feel is that, even in a very well-sorted system (or perhaps more so in a sorted system, due to extra resolution), the GISO may add that extra two levels of refinement that can't practically be achieved with pure prevention.

Again, it's time to experiment a bit :-)

Hi Asa Post,

Glad it some of it was useful! I did a bit of research back in March and really couldn't find much in the way of CAT7 that seemed to focus on good design and materials, rather than just being good enough to pass the spec.

This is the one I settled on eventually:

Conrad Electronics - Extra flat network cable U/FTP, CAT 7

Note: This is just a good quality CAT7 cable for IT applications, not a specialised audiophile cable. I'd guess there's more good quality CAT7 out there now, but this stuff is clearly a cut above the norm in the way it looks and feels. The outer cable is made from a very nice quality flexible rubber and the RJ45 connectors are very well-made.

BTW, in spite of being ribbon format, this cable is quite thick: circa 10mm x 4mm, so don't plan on just bunging it under your carpet. You can buy much thinner CAT7 ribbon cable, but the quality isn't as good.

I've done no experimentation with different cables between MD600, network switch and 808v5, so I can't say that tell you this is the best cable. My thinking was simple: long run, more chance for noise to get on the line etc ... get the best cable to reduce noise and attenuation to a minimum.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Many thanks to every contributor to this thread.
I note that it is heavily biased towards cable design, spec and quality.
Whilst this is very pertinent I am more interested in the choices and options offered in available Ethernet Switches for Sooloos applications.
Are all switches equal, or can the functions offered in GISO or similar devices already be found in high quality Galvanically Isolated Ethernet Switches?
Just a thought.

I guess the question is if the 'difference' the GISO brings is down to the fact it is Galvanically Isolated or as seems to be peoples experience it is down to the 'filtering' it applies?
