At the recent CEDIA convention in Denver the Meridian DIgital Theater demo was across the isle from the Dolby's Atmos Demo. Obviously people wondered about Meridian's plans for Atmos integration. It was my understanding that currently Meridian is developing a space based DSP that can be applied to any 5.1 / 7.1 source rather than direct Atmos decoding. The processing required for such a DSP will require the 861v8 or equivalent. On a side note, while the specific jungle and storm sound effect demos were cool in the Atmos booth the a direct playback comparison of the Star Trek : Into Darkness scene sounded better in the Meridian 5.1 system than the Atmos 7.2.4 system.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with and will it require height channels? However, without access to the metadata attached to 'Atmos objects', I struggling to undertand how it is going going to work. Point taken regarding the effectiveness of a high qulaity 5.1 system.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

I sat through the 5.1 demo and it was very impressive. However, I don't think the Atmos demo would have told you much, as Star Trek : Into Darkness doesn't have an Atmos track.

The Star Trek Into Darkness scene was from the Dolby Atmos Demo disc produced by Dolby and presented by them in their booth. I can assure you the scene was played back in 7.2.4.

I would love to see that Star Trek demo in the NYC office again, using Kscape bitstreaming and a Meridian prepro with all DSP (additional ceiling DSP speakers) using Atmos.

I suspect there is no need to rush ... probably I will add another pair of DSP speakers and go from 5.1 to 7.1 in the mean time. It would be neat to see some Meridian engineered solutions for Atmos come out.

Imitation is the highest form of flattery ? I wonder if an Meridian Atmos setup would look a little like this? Tech seems awfully close to M. Makes M look like a bargain!

Hhmm! $470k for the Atmos system and it doesn't look to have a particularly high WAF.

I sincerely hope M's Atmos setup looks nothing like that.

So, Grimani appears to use a packet based bit-perfect connection system with IP addresses for each speaker. This is quite a major development even at this price point.

@Cliff

Meridian's Atmos system will be totally invisible. grin

Maybe semantics as I read this but I don't necessarily think the speakers are directly IP addressable. I suspect it is the controller that is IP addressable and it just has comms to the speakers via its proprietary link.

Sound familiar ?

Bizarrely I think pricing as a bundle like that is probably quite effective for a certain type of customer.
