Hello,

I have a pair of DSP3100s which are on v1.10 and so I'd like to upgrade them to v1.30. I've been researching how to go about that on these forums and it looks easy enough for me to do, which is good.

However, I then came across a thread discussing the v1.30 release with a few posts (e.g. here and here) saying that some DSP3100s can be problematic during updates.

Is there any way for me to tell if my particular pair will be difficult, or do I have to try it and see (presumably with the risk of bricking them)? The serial numbers are D31-100445A and B if that helps.

I too have 3100's with that firmware. I asked Rick from audio images about a later firmware but he also warned me about bricking them. I think it's quite an expensive repair, so it's an upgrade at your own risk scenario.

FWIW I had a pair- same warning, felt lucky and went ahead- worked fine. I don't know the serial numbers though. Do you have a lucky coin?

I did it and bricked the first one I tried. Some of them require a new chip but you don't know until you try it. Rick sent guys to my home to do all 3 of them and it turned out that two needed a new chip. It didn't cost me a fortune. If you're within reach of a PP they should be able to sort you out.

FWIW I recently updated a pair of DSP3100s to v1.30 as a condition of selling them. I was lucky, everything went well.

I see from your signature that you plan to upgrade to an MC200. The only audio change to DSP3100 that v1.30 firmware brings is support for Apodising. Since the MC200 already supports Apodising maybe you should consider leaving your DSP3100s at v1.10

There isn't a way of knowing from the serial numbers if a DSP3100 upgrade will go without hitch.

I was interested in this thread as I recently bought a pair of 3100s from a Colin Triggs. Having read the tales of woe I'm not sure I'd have been too inclined to risk the upgrade but I have since learnt from Colin that mine already have the latest FW so I can happily side-step the Russian roulette style upgrade.

Oh what a shame! Being an EEPROM change I guess it requires disassembly to replace, though from the pictures on Duncan's site it looks like the chip in question is the socketed and so a fairly easy change once you have got there.

Funnily enough that same thought had occurred to me earlier today. If the MC200 does the upsampling and sends 96/24 to the DSP, then I think I'll take the easy way out.

My plan is to pick up a ex-dem or nearly new MC200 1TB when I next come across one. I think the only risk with that is that I may then suddenly develop a desire for an MS200 as well!

... And it wouldn't have if I'd taken them to the shop instead of having their staff make an 80 mile return trip to sort out old speakers that I didn't buy from them.
